but i do not see the 'edit' pen icon when i open a picture

any help would be appreciated.

You can only adjust the blur on images taken in Portrait mode.

Go to your gallery and open the picture there. There should be a pen Icon to edit or it might be in the 3 dot menu

that is the funny part. tapping on the pen icon or 3 dot menu i do not see the pen edit icon. the only time i see that is after i do a screen capture.

i think you can only blur the background of a portrait photo with a face, correct?? by tapping the 3 dots and select 'add portrait effect'.

i see s21 has the option to blur out a picture using the pen edit icon, but that icon is clearly missing for the s22
you can watch the video here for the S21
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQOeyVSn1d4

and this is the pen edit icon that is missing for the S22

My s22 Ultra does not have the same layout as in the video. I opened this picture of Kiwi & after selecting the regular edit pen, I went to the draw feature which let's you choose options to blur the photo.

Does yours look like this?

yes, i do have what you indicated in your picture. however, this allows you to blur the background before you actually take the picture, correct? what i want to do is the selectively blur part of a picture after it's been taken.

i do not have the same options you do.
1. after i open a picture, i see the pen icon, then tap on it

2. then you can see from the picture below, i do not have the same options as yours

Here's Kiwi with no blur around him & a little blur around him. Just a quick no frills attempt. (A little rough, but it was just a test.)

After you open your picture & select the edit pen, then select the smiling face. You will see the draw option & the blur option is the pen I pointed to.

the smiley face is the key. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

i wonder why samsung changed the pen edit icon to the smiley face from S21 to S22 because it sure it's not intuitive, at least for me.

have a wonderful day @BerryBubbles, and thanks again !!

You are very welcome! The Smiley Face is a strange icon for that option. Once you find it, the pens have different options like the patterns, etc.

Have fun with it!!
:)

You can also download third-party photo editing apps like Polish and PhotoRoom to do that. I almost exclusively use Polish for my photo editing needs.
