how to change default contact storage location

Hi. I have a Samsung S10E. I have an Outlook365 email account which is my primary account for all emails and contact storage.

I initially added the Outlook365 mailbox to Samsung's native email app, hoping it would instantly fill the contacts section up with my 20k contacts and fill my calendar up like iPhone did. That didn't happen. I have a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync profile in my native Contacts app with 0 contacts.

So, I installed the Outlook app. Now all my contacts appear in the native contacts app. But, nothing in the calendar.

So I added my Office365 account via Gmail. Now that problem is solved too.

But what I now have in my Contacts app is three profiles, and I have no idea where new contacts are being saved. For instance, if I create a new contact from Whatsapp, where is that contact being stored? And is it all being backed up in my Outlook database to be easily retrieved when I log in on my laptop? Three profiles just to get my database and calendar working where one did the job perfectly on iPhone. I feel like I must be doing something wrong.

Please advise. And thank you.

Sure, I can relate to you on this issue.

There's an easy fix for this. Open the contacts app ->tap the three lines on the left -> manage contacts ->default storage location. You'll change that there.

Your contacts are stored in the default storage location that the phone automatically set. For any contacts you recently added with this phone, I would suggest deleting the contact on that profile and add it to your Gmail after changing the location.

Personally, as someone who uses just a regular Outlook account, I would delete the mailbox/contacts you added to Samsung's email system (but after changing the storage location of course). The Gmail account should work fine.

There is a paid app (one-time payment) that does all of the connections well with Microsoft accounts called "Nine" (you can search Nine email in the play store) but you should try the Gmail account way first.

Thank you! I had a feeling this might be the answer.

I made the Contact profile 'Exchange' with a Gmail icon the default contact profile.

I can continue to operate all email through the Outlook app or through the gmail app right? Doesn't make any difference now?

can I unhook Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync from Contacts safely?

Doesn't seem like it's doing anything at this point, right?

How about Outlook?

You're welcome!
Yes, you can unhook from Contacts with no problem with your ActiveSync.

I think you should be just fine. It's probably not doing much aside from duplicate contacts. Unless you only want an email account for checking and sending emails, you can remove the outlook app too.

Since it sounds like you made your account an Exchange account in Gmail, that should cover the sync and calendar connections.
