how to change phone contacts to Google contacts?

Most of my contacts are Google contacts but I noticed that a few new contacts have "phone" listed by them instead of Google. Is there a way to change this so that these read "Google" instead?

thats a good question, I am coming from a N1 and I am so used to having synced with google, this HTC sense nonsense is really not helping with their own address books and sync

You can move them to sim, then move them back to google contacts. It is a process though and i will leave directions below. The way to avoid this is to make sure you change them from phone to google contacts when you save them.

to move them to google contacts> open people>menu>view>uncheck all but phone>done
>menu>select contact>menu>more>save to sim

do the above for each contact you want to move over (yes, you have to do this to each contact individually)

Menu>view>uncheck all but sim>done>menu>import/export>import from sim>google>select contacts you want to import>save

Then you can clean up your sim and phone contacts

people>menu>view>uncheck all but phone &/or sim>delete those that you want only in google off of phone &/or sim

Thanks! It does sound tedious but it works. I'll be careful to make sure they are Google contacts in the future.

Just a thought, if you do it this way, will it reload the phone contacts with back up assistant sync

I'm not sure on the backup assistant. I factory reset mine after the lady at the store set it up on mine. I have had all my contacts linked to google for a few years (since my Blackberry days) and i didn't want duplicates and a bunch of useless linked contacts. I skipped the use of backup assistant so it wouldn't try to constantly sync.

The instructions are incorrect
It is much easier to just save your phone contacts to the SD card, then import them to your laptop and from there import into your gmail. They are all transferred in a few seconds. Presto, everything is in Google and just sync

You can do Export to SD and then import from it while selecting Google instead of phone only... Hope it helps

Thanks that was super easy. I was stressing trying to do it manually. Had several gmail accounts and office accounts was driving me nuts. This did it in 20 seconds and then ran the merge from in the contacts app. Worked great.
