How to change the apps used on split screen?

My Note 10 just updated to Android 11. Before when I used split screen one app (usually VLC watching video) would stay active & keep playing whilst I could switch the other app with another pressing the 3 lines at the bottom left. Since the update when I press the button it now puts both of the apps out of use to switch split screen to another app. Not sure if that makes sense. Can anyone help

It can be, but before I had VLC on the top half of the screen & say Facebook on the bottom. When I pressed the key to switch apps, it would only switch the last of the 2 apps I had touched. So if I tapped the bottom app it would let me switch that to another app while VLC kept playing video on the top half. Now it switches both apps out

I have to play around with it on my Note 20U , but maybe android 11 changed it

I think they have changed it because after I updated the software to 11 the other day its changed

You should be able to select an app in Recents, select split screen and it becomes the top app. Then choose the bottom app using the bottom half of the screen. Switching is just a matter of tapping the app you want to bring it to the foreground.
