How to clear your Cache (stock)

In case anyone's wondering, these instructions for cache wipe on JB do work:

Thanks for the link B. Diddy. It seems these instructions on Verizon's site need to be revised a bit because Step 5 is somewhat misleading:

1. Power the device off.
2. Press and hold the Volume Up/Down then press the Power button.
3. When presented with the Boot Mode Selection Menu release all buttons.
4. Press Volume Down to select Recovery then press Volume Up.
5. From the Droid triage screen, [REVISED] simultaneously press Volume Down/Up (you should press and hold Volume Down first THEN press Volume Up while still holding Volume Down because pressing Up first won't work.)
6. Select wipe cache partition then press the Power button (use Volume keys to navigate options).
7. Select reboot system now then press the Power button.(use Volume keys to navigate options).

Thanks for the edit, although I found that I could do it by pressing both Vol Up and Vol Down at the same exact time.

Something is definitely up with my phone. Triage screen just stays up until phone reboots itself.

UPDATE: And of course try it again and it works. Pressing and holding up/down on triage screen does not work. Needs to be a quick press and release. Thanks!

This is a good point to make. I believe that at the Droid triage screen (i.e., open Droid with red exclamation point), the key thing is that the cache wipe menu will appear after you release both vol up and vol down buttons.

Ideally, how often should this be done? Are we talking once a month, or just when your phone starts getting wonky?

I don't think there's any official recommendation for how often it should be done. Some people do it once a month. I only do it after a system update, or if things are getting wonky and don't improve after a simple reboot. From what I know, there isn't any harm in doing it frequently--just make sure you don't accidentally select the option to completely wipe the phone!

JB update- should I??

I started this post looking for a way to clear the cache with jelly bean and found other posts that told me, BUT I haven't installed the new upgrade yet and I haven't decided if I should.
It gets rid of "my gallery" and changes to google gallery- is that any good? adoe sthat mean that all my pictures will live on google? it messes with "my music" app- sounds like folks have had issues with their contacts pictures too. When I updated to ICS (very late) I cleared the cache afterwards loved the changes and was sorry I waited so long. So I am leaning toward doing this update now, but I need to know what folks think about it over all. should I backup the pictures and music before I update?

Is there a way to wipe the Davlik cache without being rooted? I'm using a work provided phone and rooting is a no-no.. I installed a few clock and weather widget apps the other day and even though I uninstalled them I'd like to clear the davlik cache just in case any remnants are still there...

Hi,

I have tried this many time on my galaxy S. I can scroll up/down works but it doesn't seem to select anything. Any help.

On Step 4, if you want to always get to the System recovery without hassle just press and hold the volume down button and tap the volume up button once. It will get you to the system recovery menu every single time!
