How to control music playing through Aux with Bluetooth headset

So I live in Georgia and a hands-free law went into effect at the beginning of the month. I bought a $33 headset with audio controls on it so I could control my music (specifically, skipping tracks) that is playing through an Aux cable, but the headset controls don't have any effect. In fact, if I try and use the controls on the headset it tends to force the music to play on it instead which defeats the point. (Although once playing through the headset the skip controls do work)

My phone is a Galaxy S8 with Verizon as the carrier. I let it do all updates for apps, software and firmware. I tried making this post earlier but was told it violated the T&C in regards to Self Promotion and Advertising, so I will relate headset and my music player in use upon request.

This is how phones are designed to work. It's assumed that if you are playing through the AUX cable, you'll be controlling the music front the phone itself because there is no capability to control it through the cable. If using a headset it's assumed you'll want controls via the headset. Your only solution would be to try using something like this.

This cable, in theory, would make your aux act like a wired voice headset and give you play/pause/skip type controls. I can't promise it would work, but you'd need something like this to be able to control the audio through an aux connection if using the phone isn't an option. Otherwise look for a music player (or maybe even Android Auto), with a car mode option that gives you large on screen controls that are no more distracting than pushing a button on the stereo.

I was afraid of this. I fiddled with the headset last night and I can use it for calls, but my understanding of the new law is I'm not supposed to actually operate the phone while holding it; and my car doesn't really have anywhere to mount a holder. Thanks for the cable recommendation, I went ahead and got one.
