How to delete old messages?

My Messages app (standard, Android app) is getting slow and I noticed I have almost 2gb of messages. I thought there used to be settings for the max number of messages in a thread (and for MMS too), but I can't find anything in Android Pie on my Pixel XL. Any help?

from messages main screen
click the three dots
click settings
click more settings
click delete messages
select time frame

it's by time, not number of messages
