Android Central Question

I have a Galaxy S8 plus. I tried the "delete" route, which APPEARS to remove the number, at least from what shows for the individual listing. The number, however, REMAINS on my phone. For instance, when sending a text, along the route the individual's phone numbers show, indicating I should select one for texting. Even after DELETING their old cell phone number and adding the new one, BOTH NUMBERS will show. Unless I have written down the current number, I am faced with TWO CELL NUMBERS, one of which is now no good. HOW DO I REMOVE OLD NUMBERS COMPLETELY from my Galaxy S8!!! Help!!! Thank you.

How do you have the number saved determines how best to delete the number. Here's a quick test to see if you have the number saved more than one way, which would explain why they aren't deleting.

Open your people app, in the upper left hand corner there is a heading that says Phonebook and something under it. Touch there and you will see the source or sources of the numbers that appear as contacts. It will list all possible sources and some will have checks. Turn them all off except one, your choice, then check your contacts. Do this for each source looking for the contact info for the one you want to update and verify that you don't have duplicates of the same person stored in different places. Then you can delete from there.

Since I always recommend that people take advantage of the Google services I recommend that you save your contacts as Google contacts, as apposed to phone or some other kind of contact. You can save them to multiple Gmail accounts but if you merge contacts across accounts you'll have to edit them accordingly. So if you have an account abc123@gmail and an account 123abc@gmail and you save the number in one and the email in the other then later add a number to one with the email you'll have to go into the other account to delete the original number.

Thank you for your very prompt response.

I have another "challenge," though. You mention to "... open [my] people app ..." and then find "Phonebook" in the upper left corner.

The only app I have is "Contacts," but there is no such entry as "Phonebook" in "Contacts." There is no information, as you describe, pertaining to the storage location for these numbers.

Can you please give further assistance?

Thank you.
