I want to remove myself from friend's list on WhatsApp and prevent being found later to be contacted and/or added back?

Is something like this possible without changing my mobile number?

Have you tried blocking them?

No, blocking them will make them suspicious because usually I reply. They will know I have blocked them and if we meet, what will I say?

I want them to think I no longer have WhatsApp account.

I can't tell you what to say to them because I don't know your relationship is with them. I know what I would say to someone I don't want to be bothered by, but it varies with who the are and what the annoyance is.
