How to ensure apps install on sd-ext?

I have a rooted HTC Wildfire running CM7.1. I have created a sd-ext partition on my SD card. I enabled 'install apps to SD'. Now when I install my apps I don't see any being installed to the sd-ext partition. It's currently empty!! How do I get this right?

Also I have a problem where the phone will suddenly indicate that I must dismount the SD card first before taking it out else I will lose data. And then when I browse the SD card all folders are gone. I then have to reboot the phone and the SD card is back to its normal again. Anyone experienced this yet, what's the cause and how to fix it?

Make sure under CM setting>Application that Install location is set to Internal or Automatic

why did you create a partition? on your Sd card?
