Alright, I'm a complete Noob with all this rooting jazz. I understand it but what I don't understand is the ROM. On all the custom ROMs I see no one ever explains what they do, they just say try them out. I want to root my phone but I've spent so much time setting up all my scenes and getting the phone organized that I would hate to lose all that. I guess my main question is will I lose all my contacts, apps, and all my scenes when I root my phone?
I mainly want tethering but it would be nice to be able to delete certain things that eat up battery life that I never use.
Someone give me some tips and a little crash course on where I should start before I just start rooting without really knowing what I'm getting into.
Thanks.

Revived... lol. I tried to download the files from joeyconway and the links take me to the same "kitchen". The pc36img and recovery file from that link are the same i'm guessing but doesn't there need to be two different files? It appears the link takes you to a download to remove bloatware. Someone help?

I'm getting the same error.

Any thoughts?

I had to install HTC Sync. Now it worked. Dumb dumb dumb dum dum...

You mentioned you had to install HTC Sync on a MAC? Can you elaborate? I'm getting a "failed to copy 'PC36IMG.zip' to '/sdcard: Is a directory error and cant figure out why. I've tried everything I can find and verified all information a few times to make sure I'm doing it right.

Does this still work?

So I bought my Evo with 2.1 on it. Before realizing that 2.2 would lock it up I went ahead and did the update. Hindsight is 20/20. Now it's Oct-Nov 2010.

Baseband version 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Ver 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e
build # 3.29.651.5 CL252548
software 3.29.651.5

Does this process still work with the mix of numbers above? I've read the entire forum and can't find any specifics on what will still work and what won't.

I'm on the search for detailed instructions to root 2.2 on a mac as well. I've been searching but not sure if what I'm finding works with 2.2... I'm pretty tech savvy but this makes me feel like I'm lost of some reason. I'd even be willing to donate to someone if they could offer some help...

hey to be honest your best bet is to run RAID on your mac. If you have a 1TB hard drive, partition some of it for windows and run windows or boot camp on the mac. you CAN root your evo on your mac but the problem is the commands are different in the terminal, as well as not having the ability to run HTC sync on the mac.

Then the step to allow downgrade didn't work, repeat that part in Part 1.
What part in step one does it talk about allowing downgrades? I'm stuck at the end of P1 Step 3 just before the phone should ask me to flash, instead i get an error saying "Main version is older"

^this thread is really old and the links are most likely broken or out of date. If you have a brand new Evo then chances are this method will not work for you. Have you looked on XDA for an up-to-date Mac method?

is the off like a boss method on there probably the best one for a new evo (it seems like windows only, and i have a mac)? i feel like i had read in another thread on here not long ago that it is, but with all of the different options it can get a bit confusing. total n00b here, and i'm coming from a device that was just about all but totally unlocked fresh out of the box...

hey, anyone know of another place to get the files from the op here? there was a bad link...

If anyone figures this out, plase follow up, I am sure that there are folks out there that want to root with the Mac as myself.
