How to get an app to register as a messaging app?

[Android Central Question]

I've got a texting app from online, an APK. but my phone doesn't recognize it as a messaging app so I can't set it as default. any way to get around this?

What phone , and where did you download this apk app from ? Might not be compatible with your device.

Might also be infected with malware.

Welcome to Android Central! It's always best to install apps from a known reliable source like the Play Store. Is there a reason why you downloaded it as an apk?
