I have been using the droid incredible 2 and have always been able to download mobi file books and put them into my kindle folder on the sd card, and they've always shown up on my kindle app and opened fine and i could read them. I just got a samsung galaxy s3, and put my sd card in it, and the books that are on there won't show up in the kindle app! How do I get them to show up? Is there a hack that I need? Does my phone need to be rooted? I would really rather use the kindle app than anything else, but if there's no way for it to work, then what's the best alternate app? Please help! Thanks!

Well, the SGSIII is rather squirrelly when it comes to file paths. It already has an 'SD card' name associated with the internal memory. So you're going to have to move those files from the real SD card to the phony internal one.

You can use the My Files app (or the file manager of your choice) to find the files at '/storage/extSdCard/kindle' (or wherever they're actually at on your SD card) and copy/move them all to '/storage/sdcard0/kindle'

Anyone using a Samsung Galaxy Tab or similar Android-powered but non-Kindle device can download .mobi files from alternative sources, such as gutenberg.org and read them on Kindle. You put the files into this directory, with your tablet connected to a PC: tablet > android > data > com.amazon.kindle > files.

Just pop them straight into that root and next time you open the Kindle software it should recognize the new books.
