How to I get SMS notifications?!

Noob question here, but it's been a big deal since going to Android / S4.

I'm not getting SMS sounds / alerts when a new message comes in. On top of that, I've got 3 different SMS apps (Android default app, AT&T Messenger and GO Pro SMS). Which one should I go with and how do I disable the others from bringing in new messages?

And again, most importantly - how do I enable notifications (specifically sounds and vibration) when I get a new text message? I've missed many text messages because of this.

my vote is the default messaging app
go to settings and applications go and find apps in list and disable it.
go to settings and sounds and notifications to make changes

I've got my notifications set to make a certain sound in both the messaging app and in the system sound notifications setting. But it defaults to some water dripping sound instead. I don't know what I'm doing wrong....
