How to invoke Oreo autofill (in apps, not in Chrome)

Hello all,

I like the Oreo 8.1 autofill feature, but it seems to work or not randomly. For example, I have an app where it fills in my user name and password SOMETIMES. And other times (like right now) the feature appears to have disappeared. There is no autofill.

How do I get autofill to consistently work?
