How to mark emails as "read: without opening them

I have the new Turbo 2. My previous Motorola, when I viewed the list of emails, if I swiped to the right, I could mark them as "read". If i swiped to the left, they deleted. On my Turbo 2, either direction deletes them. Anyone know where these settings are? I've explored my phone and find nothing. Thanks.

In the GMail app?

Tap the circle icon at the left of each header (has am image or a large letter in it) to highlight, then tap the open envelope icon at the top of the screen.

It would appear I have somehow set up my outlook mail to funnel thru gmail (I have both). Anyway to get my outlook into it's own place? There is more flexibility to personalize that way.
