Android Central Question

After I've backed up the data from my Galaxy Note 5 using Smart Switch, how can I open up the Message SMEM file into a text file (or some other format) so that I can actually access/read the text messages?
I use MacBook Pro. When I tried to open the file, it asked me to search the Apple Store for a suitable application to use to open the file, but the search provided no results.

Welcome to Android Central! I believe that's an SQLite database, so you'd probably need an SQLite editor to access it. I'm not sure how easy it is to read the actual messages that way, though.

Short answer? You can't. That back up is encrypted and only accessible for restoration via Smart Switch. If you want to read the contents in a text file or excel-like table, you need to use a back up app that supports that (IIRC, however, Samsung's restrictions don't allow MMS to be backed up by 3rd party apps, although the Note 5 might not have had that restriction yet).
