How to open .rtf file

I am trying to open a file attatchment that has a extension as .rtf

An attachment to what? If it is an email then what email service are you using?

.rtf is rich text format. Basically any basic word or text editor should be able to read it.

I don't see how it can be a problem with the extension since almost any word processing app (except Kingsoft Office) will read .rtf files. But there have been quite a few problems getting some email clients to open attachments. I suspect the OP would also have problems with other formats but just has not mentioned or tried them.
