How to play music through USB-C headphone dongle?

Just picked up a handy dandy USB-C to Headphone Jack dongle to play music through my analog stereo. But when I plug the dongle into the phone, the music playing doesn't cut off the phone's speakers and start playing on my stereo. Is there a setting I need to change?

Just to be clear -- you have a 3.5 mm aux cable connecting the phone (via the dongle) to the stereo's Aux In jack? Is the stereo's source input set to Aux?

Correct. Just for giggles, I tried a pair of corded headphones and it worked as expected...muted the phone speakers and played through the headphones only. I reconnected it through the stereo again, and this time it worked, with the same source selected. I don't understand what happened, but the main thing is it now works..thank you.
