I have made up a copy of an out-of-print public domain book as a .pdf, and I'd like to get it onto a relative's Nexus 10. The source would
be either a MS Windows box with USB or I can download/setup apache web server on the box and serve the file over my small network.
I'm sure there are file conversions, possible special cable purchases and such.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Kindle app or the new google play books app - both support uploading PDFs

Transferring files to and from the nexus is very simple assuming local Wi-Fi on both devices...
On the nexus install 'AirDroid' from Google play. Start Airdroid, open web browser on windows box, log into nexus using IP/passwd on nexus screen, push file from pc to nexus books folder.

Another great app to have on your devices is Dropbox.

I have it on my PC, S4, Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and will put it on my Nexus 10 when it arrives next week.

You can store and transfer files between all the devices. Works great for photos too.
