How to reduce background noise when making calls?

I can absolutely vouch for the Plantronics Voyager Legend (the one with the boom mic). The only downside is that it's a mono earpiece, so you can't enjoy stereo sound with it for music.

There seems to be two variations, I found on Amazon, one is about $80 and the other is $280.

Do you know which one you used?

This one is about $80.00:

It looks like the 5200 is only 89 pounds and the Voyager is 63.
I live in the US and have both. Love them. I've used those for years for phone calls and both have excellent noise cancellation. I work from home so I wear one for 8 hours and forget I have it on. One caveat, the battery call talk time can vary between 5-6 hours, not the 7 hours as advertised. But it is actual talk time so 6 hours can actually last a couple of work days.

The 5200 is the one my wife used. No need to spring for the more expensive one, unless the various bells and whistles are important to you.

Thank you for your reply.

The Plantronics - B235 Voyager Legend is shown as £231 for me in the UK. I converted to dollars as I don't know where people are located, thought it would make more sense.

Great that the cheaper one provides good noise cancelling. You do mean on the microphone? So your callers can't hear the background noise in your location at all? It's the caller, who may be a customer, that I'm concerned about. Noise cancelling for me wouldn't make much sense as it's only in one ear anyway.

That's correct. When my wife used that headset, she could be on a call walking near a busy street, and the person on the other end of the call wouldn't hear any traffic noise at all.

My wife and I often use it when we're in our local casino. When we call each other to find out where the other person is we can't even hear all the slot machines going off from the other person. Both sides of the conversation sound clear with no background sounds heard.
The Plantronics earpieces do not go into the ear canal. So no there is no noise blocking in that respect. I prefer that because I like to hear sounds around me to be aware of my surroundings. That's one reason I don't use my pixel buds very often at all except when I use only one ear bud for phone calls only.

The Amazon screenshots I took are from the UK Amazon store.

That's a good point, if they sit over the ear, it could be difficult to hear sometimes, though you would be aware of your surroundings.

Actually, I think my wife had the Voyager Legend, not the 5200. Either way, I think you'll be happy.

The ear tip goes just in the ear but not in the canal. In the example I used I can hear my wife's voice just fine with the volume turned up amidst all the racket of the slot machines.
The other nice feature of the Plantronics is these can be worn in either ear.
The 5200 has better wind noise cancellation but other than that the noise cancellation of both is superior. My wife has my two Voyagers and I have two 5200s. One is always in the charging case. She does the same with hers. The charging case for whichever model you get is worth the money.

Since you tried the Plantronics Voyager Legend, I found this review video. The indoor mic test did well, but the outside "real world" test tanked.

To give you an idea of how it may compare to a similar Blue Parrot, here's a video comparing the newer 5200 to one of Blue Parrot's competing ear pieces. It sounds like the noise cancellation is about equal and good for both. The Plantronics mic had a louder voice but partially distorted. The BP mic was quieter, but much more clear. Otherwise their audio performance was about equal.

This video reviews the Blue Parrot B650-XT, which I'd say is the current Cadillac of Bluetooth headsets. Noise cancellation is better than the over-the-ear styles above and on par with prior B-series headsets. I have the 550, and what surprised me was how much clearer and natural sounding the speaker's voice is. All the others, even my 550, make you sound a little "off" and just came with the noise canceling territory.

It's a pricey headset, but you can still get earlier versions for much less. Being in the U.K, I'm not sure what options you'll have from them.

That's strange, because I can say that the Voyager Legends that my wife had worked very well in the outdoor setting (based on test calls she made to me, asking if I could hear traffic noise or nearby screaming babies).

B. Diddy - Thank you for all the information

I wonder if it's because I had the cheap version, cost about £63.00, wheras the Plantronics - B235 Voyager Legend costs about £230.00
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronic...ag=hawk-future-21&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU7084886

and the one above in the video:

Costs £163

I've sent mine back now.

Spoke to someone from Poly today, she recommended the Plantronics Voyager 6200 UC:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronic...ag=hawk-future-21&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU7084886
I found a review for it:

It does remove a lot of the background noise, not sure if he means for himself or the caller.
You can hear the test with background noise at about 3:00.

The person I spoke to sent me a link where I can find their partners and speak to them about the devices, not sure if they'll really be able to help but it's worth a shot.

No worries.

Do you think your wife's headset worked well because she has the expensive version?

I'm sure she had the Voyager Legend (I'm the one who shopped for them). At some point, she might have had a 5200 as well. But I know for sure she had the less expensive one.
