How to remove +1 from texts in hangouts

I am having a problem where I cannot text to 6 digit numbers (for card balances and whatnot) because there is a +1 in front of the number. There is no way to edit the number before sending the text. I have tried deleting the contact and manually typing the 6 digit number but it still adds +1 in front of it (which gives me an error when I send the text) . This is driving me crazy... Does anyone know how to get hangouts to remove the +1?

You can't. It is on by default. As more and more numbers pop up, eventually everyone will be forced to use area codes and the +1

Yeah but these aren't phone numbers they are text only 6 digit numbers.

I saw a proposed solution in another forum: just dial a + in front of your six digit number. So, if you are trying to text 634721 (that's a made-up number; I have no idea what it might do if dialed :) ), dial +634721.

Problem solved (supposedly).

This no longer works. It prompts you to invite the "+" number to hangouts rather than bypassing the "+1". I had to switch SMS to the default Android Messenger to contact the SMS code I wanted to and then switch it back to Hangouts.

This is an annoying oversight for Google engineers. :-\

I ended up ditching hangouts altogether and changing to the default messenger. Was to much of an issue for me and messenger has been working flawlessly.

Thank you. This worked perfectly for me!

I just now tried the +before the number and it worked flawlessly. Perhaps you not pressing the right arrow afterwards, or this has since been fixed since you posted this last year. In my case I was trying to get my phone balance which is BAL to 7243, and got it by entering +7243 for the number.
