How to Remove Clockwork & Update GIngerbread

I'm going to admit, I don't know much about rooting. When I originally rooted my phone, I installed the Clockwork Mod. Now, whenever I get the Gingerbread update on my phone, the installation ends up getting canceled due to the Clockwork Mod, or I believe that's why. What I'm hoping you guys can help me with is:

1) Removing the Clockwork Mod
2) Updating Gingerbread
3) Installing a Mod that may be useful to me, I'm mostly looking for something reliable with good battery life, or if you think it's in my best interest, restoring it to factory.

If you need any other information, feel free to ask, thanks for reading.

When you say install a Mod, I assume you mean a custom ROM. If that is the case, it is good news for you. You actually WANT to have Clockwork Mod (CWM) on there. You are in the same boat I was. Here is what I did:
1. Spend some time reading all the great info about rooting and ROMing the Epic in these forums and around the web. Go to YouTube and look at qbking77's videos.
2. Install Titanium Backup Root and/or MyBackup Root and back up apps and data.
2.1 If your launcher has an option to backup, do that. Consider taking screenshots of your home screens to help restore later.
3. Make sure your battery is fully charged before doing a lot of this stuff.
3.1 Download the Gingerbread ROM you want onto your SD card root directory (or do it later via your computer)
4. Get familiar with the three finger boot method. Turn off phone, turn back on pressing down volume, camera and then power. Hold all three down until capacitive button lights come on. This will take you into CWM.
5. In CWM, you can make a backup, also called a Nandroid backup. This is a full backup.
6. Back up entire SD card contents to your computer hard drive (just to be extra safe).
7. I had an older version of CWM on there, so first thing I did was flash a newer version per a qbking77 video (I have 3.1.0.1.) There is a newer version now (5 something?), but I'm not sure it is as stable as older stuff---again, read, decide for yourself.
8. Here's where it gets a little stressful: In CWM, wipe the cache partition 3 times. Under Advanced, wipe the Dalvik cashe 3 times, and then wipe data/factory reset 3 times. THIS WILL DELETE ALL YOUR DATA!
9. Flash (i.e. install zip file in CWM) that ROM you put in your SD card root directory
10. Start rebuilding your phone. Be sure to have usernames and passwords for Google and everything else. Best to download apps from the market and restore data from Titanium or MyBackup I've read, especially when going from one OS version (Froyo) to another (GB).
11. Be happy with how much better your phone runs.
You can also think about changing the file system from RFS to EXT4 at this time, but I'll leave that research to you. The other thing to think about is SD card cleanup. Once up and running, I made sure all apps were loaded on the phone, formatted the SD card, then copied media and other stuff (like Titanium backups) from the computer backup.

Thanks for taking the time to lay this out, and make it much easier! I really appreciate it! I've now installed a new ROM (not Mod, lol), and am in the process of downloading and installing all of my previous apps. I had Titanium Backup, and it said the last automatic backup was on November 22nd, but after I installed (flashed?) the new ROM and went into it, it said no backup had ever been run. How would I go about avoiding this in the future? Is there an easier way to get all of my apps back than redownloading all of them?

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

Wow, you are fast. Glad I could help with what I've learned from everyone here.

A few ideas on the backup. #1) Keep scrolling down in TiB. When I loaded everything back up, installed apps were on top and old apps that weren't back on the phone were all on the bottom kinda crossed out. I'm hoping what you're looking for is down there. #2) Was the original TiB file on the phone and got wiped? #3) If you backed up your SD card, look for a TitaniumBackup folder. Maybe you just need to put that back on your SD card? In TiB, look at Backup folder Location in Preferences

I'm in the same boat as you and trying to learn to restore stuff quickly. I might play with ROMs more if getting my phone back to daily driver status was easier. I think once on Gingerbread, if we wipe and flash again we can just restore the apps and their data, but don't quote me on this. I'm no expert. I do know to be careful not to restore system files. One thing I forgot in the orginal writeup that can help is to backup your launcher if possible. I took screenshots (used ShootMe--now removed from Market) of my home screens to help get everything back and later saw that GoLauncher has a backup option.

Biggest thing with switching from Froyo to GB is to not use any of your system apps from a restore with Titanium or MyBackup Root. Reason ? Well your switching OS, and changing from a completely different layout of the OS and there are minor and major changes in some apps so by pulling in your previous system apps from a Froyo restore to GB you are setting yourself up for disaster....

I would recommend using only DATA ONLY restores using TB or MyBackup after redownloading your apps and getting your device up running do the data only restore.

Once your on GB and make backups then you can usually get away with restoring both the app and the data because its the same OS.

Otherwise it looks like the help you got here has worked out and I will let you carry on .
