thanks for the reminder to replace a few of mine with pix from my gallery.
Took 10 seconds.
The rest are the icons....
Which, lol, I had no idea could irritate some people.
Actually, some of my contacts deserve an irritating icon. :)

Same issue with the galaxy note 2. The faces are creepy and all, but how do I remove the thumbnail as a whole in the individual message screen, so that it leaves just the messaging bubbles?

Actually, things HAVE changed since updating my TMO SG3 from 4.1.2 to 4.3. The aforementioned creepy faces are new, as is at least one additional option in the menu (this is for other applications as well). There are nine options in the Contacts menu, which exceed the "window", such that you have to scroll down to get to the last item in the list, "Settings". The QWERTY keyboard has changed some of the secondary assignments, e.g. the '!' moved from the A to the D, and a semi-long press brings up more than punctuation options.

Wish I could roll back to 4.1.2... :(

Why don't one of you post directions on Amazon or Ebay. dakhath, Jackson Buechlein and mhinc all seem to have found the way. I will pay for directions that work. I called Samsung. They took over operation of my phone and demonstrated how to change ONE photo. I knew how to do that so it was a waste of time. Samsung claimed Google creates the updates so they gave me a number for Google. The people at Google could not help so they gave me the number of an independent Google Support provider. They could not help. They gave me the same number at Google that Samsung had already given me. Catch 22. I tried what dakhath, Jackson Buechlein and mhinc suggested and it DID NOT work! I will pay to know how so I can stop wasting my time. mhinc, you live near me so I will take my phone to you if necessary.

I owned an S3 mini 4.1.2 and now I have a new S4 mini 4.2.2 which I'm not satisfied by its OS version due to undesirable changes, like icons in messaging app and Adobe Flash Player issues, to name a few.

I have an idea in regards to the icons in messaging app. Maybe we can replace the current MMS apk (4.2.2) to the MMS apk that is used in 4.1.2. Basically uninstalling the new MMS and installing the old MMS. By doing this, the face icons in the messaging app will not be there anymore.

Will this work? I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks

Just want to reply to all above.
The "creepy" image has me at a loss as well. I too have hundreds of contacts most of which have no photo. I do have a job and a life so changing them one at a time is not going to happen.
Some of us use our phones as a tool.
I'm personally offended that without my permission the update changed my icons, changed my ringtones, is now offering to sell me voice to text services at $2.99 per month, and allowed the phone to flash when receiving an incoming call, just to name a few.
I happened to be in a movie theater when this happened and my first thought was that some whacko would go "Florida" on me. I jumped out of my seat and ran to the lobby to find out what was happening.
In plain english can someone suggest a way to change the default contacts image or thumbnail back to the original or at least something other than the creepy white guy child molester? Thanks in advance.

Just wonder if anyone has found a solution to this or written an app. I think many would pay for an app that would go through all contacts without a picture attached, and change the default icon to a specified JPEG or choice of generic icons. And hey, how about looking at the first name and making it a unique one based on that. :)

Yes....yes.......it is clear that you can go in and change all of your contacts manually. But for those with many contacts, this is not a very reasonable solution.

If they were smaller it would not be such a big deal but on an S5 they pop up all over and are large!

Thanks for any input,
BJB1

I use the icon changer app in Google play. I used it to change go SMS pro to the default messaging icon and the title 'Messaging'. It works really well

Posted via Android Central App

Which icon changer did you use? I have tried a few and none seem to be able to change the icons for the individual contacts, only the icons for app shortcuts.

Most annoying for me are the huge creepy face icons on the 'favorites' contact page. Valuble script character space is so limited now that It's almost impossible tell similar entries apart, but boy is there lots of space taken by useless, hideous, unwanted icons. Would love to just have a 'list' view with NO icons! Anyone figure out how to do that?

Reason I'm reading the thread is because it's annoying me why I have to scroll down on my phone just to enter basic tel numbers and email addresses while the real-estate on my screen is wasted by this inane picture.

Why can't they just have a setting "Use Photos with contacts? On / Off"?.

That portion of the world (probably a huge majority) who don't want to have photos of their contacts anywhere will happily turn it off and get on with their lives.

Alternatively just put the face icon as a 0.5cm square somewhere that can be clicked on to edit should some benighted soul actually want to and don't take up half of my screen all the time.

The way to change the contact default weird icon:

Click on the app, go to the pic & click edit. When that opens up, you have a choice of picking a numberof those weird pics. Or you can snap a pic or use a pic from your gallery. Your camera should be open. Don't snap pic, instead click save in the upper right hand corner & the pic will be gone after you restart your phone. You don't need to download any app changers or anything. It's very easy, except they don't tell you that. I did this before but I forgot how to do it. It took me three days to figure it out again this will work; very simple & easy. Don't take a picture and don't pick any icon just save it while the cameras on and you will lose that creepy photo
