[How-To] ROOT and UN-ROOT Your 2.1 Droid X (without ADB)

I understand this does not worked with the leaked froyo update, but what about the .604 update? When i enter the 2nd line cp /sdcard/download/exploid ./exploid it says no such file or directory. I extracted everything to the download folder of the sd card.

Yes it does work with .604 since that's what I was on when I did it.

I would double check with astro to make sure the file is in there.

Nevermind, dumb mistake on my part. I already had a file named update.zip saved in the download folder so when i renamed it somehow the original update.zip file i had overwrote it.

Thanks, this is much better than using adb.

No doubt.

Good to hear that you got it.

Scared Rooter

Well, i have been wondering about rooting.. how hard.. and such. My brother rooted his android phone and says he would have it no other way. I found this procedure, and being ex military, found it REALLY easy to follow. I made one mistake typing, restarted and BOOM! rooted Droid x. I installed the WIFI tether program and tested.. worked! and it was faster than the Average ISP. Thanks for the awesome instructions!!

And just rooted my Droid X....thanks for the instructions...made it real easy...worked the first time...not sure all of the tricks I can do now that it is rooted...is the a place on the site that gives you some?

OK...what am I doing wrong? I can find no file called "resource.ashx", to rename. Nor do I find a file called "update.zip".

This happened to me also, the DroidXRoot.zip file never changed its named. Just rename that file to update.zip and it should work.

When i downloaded the file it stayed" DroidXRoot.zip" Do I still have to rename it? I already extracted the files to that directory, but haven't taken the next step yet. Just want to check before proceeding....

As long as you have it on your SD card in your download folder and unzip it there, it doesn't really matter what the name of it is. The reason for renaming it is that when you download it with your device it'll name it something funny without the .zip extension.

Okay finally finished and got it right If someone as newb as me can do this then its pretty easy

I encountered a problem in the unrooting process that said Superuser.apk was not located.

I went back with Astro File Manager into "system/app/" and i found that "Superuser.apk" was actually titled "Superu.apk" .

So im going to retry everything and see if the name difference (which it should be) was the problem :)

What method did you use to root?

Followed the steps. Went to check if I was rooted. Typed su in the terminal emulator. A pop-up was displayed "Superuser Request" "The following app is requesting superuser access" I clicked Allow but the terminal emulator is still on $. Every time I type in su it keeps giving me the popup even if I check the "remember" box and allow.

Did I do something wrong?

Well, I reset the terminal emulator a couple times and tried su again. It gave me the popup but this time it accepted and gave me the # prompt.

I think everything is a.ok!

Thanks for the tutorial! Now to find out what I can do that is special since I rooted my phone.

Glad to hear you got it, I was just going to tell you to reboot the device and try again but sounds like your good to go.
