How to Root Galaxy T-Mobile Galaxy S3!

Please provide your definition of 'unlock':
- are you trying to unlock the bootloader so that you can load an alternate Recovery method or different ROM?
- are you trying to carrier unlock the phone so that you can switch to a different carrier?

Thanks for replying. I would like to switch to a different carrier. T-mobile will not give me the unlock code. I made the bone-headed mistake of updating to 4.3. I knew better. All of the directions I can find do not seem to work with 4.3 installed and Big Brother Knox makes downgrading risky. Are there directions to unlock with 4.3 installed? Or do I have to root to get anywhere? Thanks again.

T-mobile will not give me the unlock code.

I was under the impression that as long as your account was in good standing the carrier was required to provide you an unlock code. I remember reading recently that the FCC was working on something to require them to do this - you might want to mention that when you call.

Edit: BTW, this has nothing to do with rooting and loading other ROMs and Knox -> that is all unlocking the bootloader related. Nothing to do with switching to a different carrier.

Unfortunately, through no fault of my own, the account is not in good standing. I have attempted to resolve that issue with T-mobile but to no avail. I have attempted to SIM unlock following the directions that include dialing *#197.... but one of the steps, specifically: [4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ is not available to me. Further research has indicated that this option has disappeared with the upgrade to 4.3. Hence my question as to whether or not someone has figured a way to SIM unlock without downgrading to 4.1.1 or 4.1.2. I have gotten to the point where I select [3]Perso SHA256 OFF. Without the [4] option available I backed to the main menu and selected the SYNC option and rebooted phone... this did not work. I have been unable to locate directions similar to the step by step provided for 4.1.1 users for users that upgraded to 4.3 and are threatened with bricking their device via KNOX if they attempt to downgrade. Thank you again for taking the time to respond - I do appreciate it.

I'm not a moderator, but the answer is pretty much - yes, it requires a computer to root. There's one method that doesn't (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276) but it didn't work on my SCH-I535; YMMV.

i tried all of that then i downloaded root checker pro and it's saying that i dont have proper access to superuser, why is it saying that?
