[How-To] Root LG Optimus S

Woke up fresh this morning..started again. Rebooted the phone, went straight through and BAM! Rooted...you guys are awesome.

Awesome, Glad to here. Welcome to the club. Yes please, like ksmith said, hang around here and offer assistance to other people that may run into the same trouble you did.

We're fun people. :)

Is there a way to root on Mac, or do I just need to go to work today and plug in to my PC?

The application from LG that installs the drivers is an exe so short answer, no. The phone can mount to a Mac, sdk works with Mac, but without drivers you're kind of SOL. As soon as LG does something about that it would be the same steps.

1 more post .... why not? I'm finding LOTS of mods that can be done to this phone and as long as you're rooting you'll probably consider these hacks/mods. A secret guest will also be owning and developing for this phone so ..... ;)

This thread will likely turn into a general hacking/mod thread to root then improve performance of the Optimus device. As long as you're rooting, why not? If i don't need these additional posts I'll delete them.

Any more work on the lots of mods you've found? Pretty excited to see what this phone is "really" capable of.

Thanks,
Jason

There are 2 mods being slowly but surely worked on but they are kind of taking a back seat to some of the other optimus related stuff were doing. If we could only squeeze 25 hours into a day we'd be in the money!

Doesn't help either my Dev partner still hasn't gotten his hands on this phone yet. Were kind of a Bacardi and cola team, both are good but together they are great! LOL. Those were some of the best commercials

At least you don't need to figure out how to fit 48 hours of work into an 8 hour work day?

Hey guys i just wanted to share this with everyone, and let me preface it by saying, nobody has tried this on the optimus S although, it would work just fine knowing what i know ....

Turducken posted THIS in the optimus T root thread. Now before you get all click happy ... read MY RESPONSE

Even if this method works just fine, i highly suggest you go about it that way detailed in post #1 as HERE is a real life account from iamlilysdad who did a 1-click method in the past and regretted it.

Cheers!

EDIT- It seems this app has just made the front page of Androidcentral.com this does not change my opinion but is a good place to read others opinion.

It is a big pain to have to go back and relearn something like ADB. I will say that when you have problems and are rooted and ask for the people that offer the help will point to ADB and start giving you commands to run so they can troubleshoot.

If you don't know how to use ADB it can be very frustrating for the person offering help, and for you the user trying to solve and problem and get your phone to do what you want.

I went back and forth with someone for about two days getting my EVO unrooted and then rerooted the "right" way so that I would know a little more about adb. Now that I know more about it I can get walked through trouble shooting steps with ease, and all those ADB commands I see posted make sense to me. :)

EDIT: It might not seem like a big deal now, but when custom ROM's, kernels, and recoveries become available it will become apparent why ADB is important. If you have problems you will need to know ADB. Just look at all the people that had problems rooting. All they had to do was post their command prompt and we could see what was going on. :)

I did the 1 click root before reading your opinion about it. I am glad to report though that I did gain root and have superuser, busybox and the apps/hacks that you recomended, all with success. I am hoping to get a custom recovery soon. Thanks for the hard work still Ksmith

You'll be able to run root apps like titanium backup.

Have you installed the super user app?

Sent from my Optimus T

Yep i followed all the steps in the first post, installed titanium backup to install busybox. now when i do adb shell and use the 'cp' command, i get this error:
cp: permission denied.
same when i do adb shell remount, i get the permission denied.

I have just used z4root and it has worked like if I turned to phone of and bam its rooted im not new to rooting but it is much easyer but everyone is right on at least knowing alittle bit of what adb is and dose will deff come in handy but dont have pc now so this was great for the time being its always easy to root and dow everything from the phone but im +2 using this method and successfully rooting and used all recommending apps mentioned in the first page thanks for all the new help on this phone cant wait for more great stuff to come ;-)

how do you set the phone to charge only mode

It should default to charge only. When you connect it it should say:

USB connected
Select to copy files to/from your computer

In the notification try. If it says that you're on charge only mode.
