How can I make it so that my notifications for email and my texts are different?

In gmail, I go to settings-->account setting, but when I look at the notification settings, there is no option to change the sound.

is the best way to do this is for me to change the universal notification sound (settings-->sound-->notifications) then just change my sms tone in Go SMS Pro?

I'm not sure what version of gmail you have but if you go to gmail then settings then choose your email account, then choose labels to notify at the bottom, then inbox, then you can click on ringtone to change the gmail ringtone. This is for the latest version of gmail.

holy schnikes - thanks for this (and glad i did such a generic search and not specific to my Evo) as the damn bleeping from the gmail notifications was driving me batty and I couldn't find the info on how to silence it anywhere. Why they have to make it so damn hard to find something as simple as this is beyond me. This should be in the main gmail settings under notifications and THEN maybe submenu it to allow you to pick and choose by labels.

That would work.

You can also configure the notifications in Gmail, but it's not as intuitive as I'd like. You have to go into Settings and click on "Labels to Notify", and you can set a separate notification tone and rules for each of your labels ("Inbox" is the default, but you can set them for any folder you've got set up to sync).

Edit: Oops, looks like someone already answered this in the meantime. ;)

Wow thanks for this,
I think one of my kids messed around with my phone and a song was coming on everytime I got an email LOL

Thought I'd update this thread as the navigation seems to be different in the latest Android OS version.

- use an mp3 for ringtone
open mymusic app / my library / choose a song and play it / press pause / settings / more / "use as ring tone"

- gmail notification tone
open gmail / settings / more / account settings / select account / scroll to "labels to notify" / inbox / ringtone / select a tone

- sms (text) notification
phone settings / sound / notification ringtone / select ringtone

I don't know how to set a custom notification tone.

Thanks for the sensible, straight forward response. Took me right to where I wanted to go and do. Have a Lucky Day! Curtis

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! I have been trying to figure this out and i came across your post and it worked!.

The settings are under the individual boxes.
You now have
Primary, Social, and Promotions.
Go into each one Click the Menu On a Nexus it is the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner On a S3 it is the button to the left of the home button.
then chose "Label Settings"
Then check the "label notifications" you can set a different sound for each box, I just Picked "none" for the Promo/Social Ones.

Edit: That is for the Phones, on a tablet you pick "Manage Labels" everything else is the same.
hope this helps :)
