How to setup a POP email account, then disable it temporarily?

First of all I apologize for my avatar (user icon) - I lost a bet to my little brother.

Secondly, I have successfully created a POP email account on my HTC Incredible2 but I don't want my phone to sync the POP email account very often. I only want to check my POP mail if I am traveling or something, it will be a rare need.

I want to save my settings for the POP email (username/pass) so I don't have to re-enter them every time, but for the most part the sync should be disabled.

Ideally I'd like to set the POP email so I can manually check my email but it will not sync at all unless I tell it to.

How is this possible? From the settings on the phone I cannot tell. Thanks!

You might want to download (from the Market) K-9 Mail which is a free app. I've installed it and configured my POP account to only check for mail when I choose (in the menu) "check mail." Once installed, open K-9 Mail, configure your account. Then ( I think) go to settings --> background sync and click "never." It's a nice e-mail app, better than the stock application and very user friendly. Hope this helps!
