NOTE: These directions were written on a phone with a small screen size, so your screen may display differently. The general idea is still the same and all processes should go in the same order. :)

There have been many questions about setting up Google Voice properly since Sprint and Google attempted to merge the Google Voice settings for phone numbers/voicemail. Even if you have already merged your numbers, you can separate them and use them as different lines when calling people. Follow these instructions. :)

NOTE: For those that have already merged your number (whether by accident or you just want to change it back now) need to complete these two steps before proceeding.

1: Uninstall Google Voice from phone.
2: Login to www.google.com/voice and click "disable" here:

Then disable here (mine says enable, yours will say disable if you have it "synced"):
NOTE: If you link does not say "disable" then skip this step and continue to instructions.

EVERYONE SHOULD BE AT THE SAME POINT BEFORE GOING FURTHER.
-No Google Voice on phone.
-Disable link clicked on www.google.com/voice OR never activated before

Now, on to setting it up! :)

Download and install to phone:

Open up Google Voice and DO NOT TAP ANYTHING! (This is a very important step)
You will see this:

Scroll down until you see this "hidden" skip button ;) and tap it:

Sign in with gmail account:

Tap "Next":

Select this so that you have the option when making calls (this can be changed later):

Tap "Next":

Click number to dial (just to be certain) and then tap "Configure" to continue:
Note: Dialing the number does not result in a voice call to anyone. It just dials a system to update.

Select "Google Voice":

If you get this notice, just select "OK" and then hit the physical back button to get back to Google Voice setup:

Click "Finish":

NOW, you must do one more thing to make Google Voice work!
Go to www.google.com/voice
gv_online2.png

Then click here to activate your new Google voicemail to send notifications to your phone!:
NOTE: If you get any additional popups here just click ok/done to dismiss them.

Now, you can add the widget to your home screen and have someone call you to give it a try. For the first time, give it a few minutes to update before thinking it doesn't work. Enjoy! :D

Gives you many more options. Separate number for free, visual voicemail, separate voicemail box. You can also have different voicemail messages for different people. For example, if I want to have a greeting for my friends, I can set one up and it will be different from the one for my family. They would hear different greetings when they call the voicemail... So anyone calling my Sprint number would hear the Google voice greetings I set up, granted they were setup properly... Many different things. There's no way I could list them all. Text to speech, etc... I use it as a replacement to Sprint's VVM as I don't use it.

does this still work? i just got a nexus s 4g and i don't have the "skip" option. really annoying. was able to use both numbers on t-mobile. i want to be able to choose what number i call from.

Re: [HOW TO] Setup Google Voice with Sprint and have separate num

i just used this for my sprint HTC EVO 4G. The skip button isn't hidden anymore, but the directions are still good. I'm using it as a second phone numbe while leaving my sprint voicemail in tact.

Re: [HOW TO] Setup Google Voice with Sprint and have separate num

Thanks! Just got a replacement phone and was going nuts (use my phone for business/personal).

I just got a sprint HTC Evo 4g LTE last night and I am having real problems setting up google voice. I was on the phone all day with HTC, The Geek Squad, and an android developer. My problem is sprint roams at my house so I have always used google voice when at home so my calls and text come through wifi. I cannot for the life of me get it to work on this phone. Wifi works and I get emails from all my accounts but I cannot get my calls or text to come through Google Talk. The only way I get calls is if I am roaming. If I turn off the network to keep from roaming then I cant make or recieve calls or texts. I have had many phones and this has never been an issue for me. I hope someone out there can help me out.:'(

There is an app you can use over wifi... groove ip lite. Look for it on the play store.

It uses g. Voice over a Wi-Fi connection, because the way Google voice sets up on your phone, you don't use the data part.
