How to shut off Samsung phone number verification?

While trying to set up my five-year-old's tablet, Samsung asked us to verify our phone number. Tablets don't come with phone numbers, and my five-year-old doesn't have a phone. There seems to be no way to bypass this screen, and Samsung claims some 18 apps need updating. I can't determine what those apps are without Samsung's verification of a phone number. How should I proceed?
