how to sort app icons in Android 5.1 on Galaxy S4?

Other answers tell of an editing option on a menu, but I have no sign of these on my app drawer, nor a sweep icon

It depends on the phone and the version of Android. I don't have an S4, but I'm guessing that your only choice is alphabetical and you can't change it.

If only. The icons are in an an apparently random order, perhaps the order of installation after a re-set. If they were alphabetical I would be able easily to find the ones I want.

The solution I have found is an app. ABC (Home Launcher) for example provides a quick fix by setting all the apps (in the drawer) as the home screen, and hey presto, they are in alphabetical order.

I've been running Nova Launcher for years, and the app drawer is normally in alphabetical order. Sorting them on the home screen, though, is manual. (But once you have them set, you can save the setting, and if it ever gets messed up, you can restore it from the backup. You can also lock the home screens so they can't accidentally get changed.)
