How to stop programs running in the background ?

I had a S4 before my N4 and I use to be able to stop things that were running in the background with a widget I had. I use to be able to long press the home button and there was a way to shut down and erase open running things in the background. How can I do it now ?

use the captive button on the left of the home button.

Thanks, you should have seen all the crap that was open when i did that lol. Now it says "No Recent Apps". Thanks again!

hehe, those are just recently opened apps, they may not actually be in memory.
