I've been a little hesitant on updating due to an innate fear of bricking my phone. (I don't exactly know what I'm doing :-[ ) Can anyone tell me how to update to EC05 or even EG22 without bricking? I'm running a rooted version of 2.1. (My dad rooted it for me)

First if you want to save anything important like say your Angry Birds achievements, certain data, etc... then you should download and install MyBackup Root or Titanium Backup from the Market and perform a backup.

I will assume at this point you just want to get updated to stock EC05 Froyo and then you can root or whatever you like after that is complete.

[INFO]
Go to the following thread below, use procedure #1 to upgrade your device to Froyo EC05.

[WARN]This will completely wipe your device clean and it will appear factory stock with official Froyo EC05 as if you purchased it brand new right now.[/WARN]

[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Once you have completed this then you can root your device again using our guides and then re install either Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root to restore your backups.[WARN] I strongly suggest that you re download any apps that you are restoring data to first in the Market. Then with your backup application select RESTORE DATA ONLY because you are bringing data from a completely different version of OS (Eclair) over to Froyo. This will minimize conflicts.[/WARN] [/INFO]

Any other questions that may arise please feel free to ask.

I heard there was a version of EC05 that did not require a memory wipe. Is that still possible?

Yes there is. We have one available but it will root your device so once official GB does come out you would have to use Odin once again to return to stock EC05 to grab the official OTA update or use other means to update to an official GB ROM. We can tackle that at a later date you choose to do so.

[Odin-EC05] Froyo EC05 Prerooted/CWM v2.5.1.0 RFS (Odexed)

You will find two versions in this thread. One is a NO WIPE (retains your current data) and the other is a normal Odin flash, wiping your device.

Thank you very much! You have been a great help.
On that note, how much is a Pepsi in Illinois?

Trial and error.

First uninstall the Samsung driver you installed. Then reboot your computer. See if your computer will recognize your device without any drivers installed (as if you wanted to access the mass storage/sd card using your computer). This will tell us if your cable/computer is communicating in the first place.

If this is working then you may need to try a different Samsung driver, 32/64 bit drivers try them both regardless of which setup your computer is.

The stock cable could be the culprit even being brand new it just doesn't work for some people and we recommend picking up a Blackberry cable or EVO cable, anything besides the stock cable that came with the Epic. They are a few bucks on Amazon or a local computer store.

See where that gets you before I suggest anything further.

BTW, if your using a computer running Windows 7 this will be a challenge because for some reason Windows 7 and the Epic just don't seem to want to communicate very well. I end up using my older computer in the house that is running Windows XP.

I moved over to my dads netbook (windows xp). followed all directions, now phone is bricked and odin refuses to pass the update, and computer refuses to recognize phone. Help! (I'm doing the no wipe version of EC05)

EDIT: I just realized i unplugged early! i went back to http://forums.androidcentral.com/ep...68-how-factory-restore-fix-bricked-phone.html and saw i wasn't supposed to unplug early! I'm freaking out! especially since the backup didn't finish and i was counting on this being an easy install *facepalm*

[INFO]Pull your battery out of the device and leave it out.

With your battery still removed, connect your device via USB cable to your computer and attempt to boot into Download Mode and run the Odin package again.

If for some reason the Froyo EC05 package doesn't want to complete, then download and use the Froyo EB13 package (procedure #2 in the [How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone) thread). This package is usually bullet proof and should get it pushed through when EC05 fails.

Please report back with your results.[/INFO]

nothing on EC05. does EB13 wipe memory? and if it does, will it affect the sd card?

Yes the other Odin packages will wipe the memory. That was a customized Odin package my fellow AC adviser did that didn't wipe memory when flashed, sort of a "one of a kind" deal.

So, either way, I'm losing memory? At this point, I should just focus on getting the phone to work?

Yes at this point your more concerned with getting the device back up and going.

With any of these procedures, rooting, etc.. none of them will ever erase anything on your sdcard. Your sdcard is basically "a safe zone".

Unfortunately, she flatlined on me. I have tried every single OS available (EB13, EC05, EC05 w/ root, DI18, and DK28) and none work. I was up until 3, went to sleep, and continued from 8 until now. She's a lost cause. I already called my local Sprint store and set up a time for repairs and possibly replacement. :'( She was a good one too. Thank you very much for the help Paul. I appreciate it a lot, because you took the time to actually explain everything, when no one else would. I will keep you in mind if I ever run into trouble with my epic again. And still intend to buy you that pepsi :p

Sorry it turned out this way. Normally we can always "revive" or bring back a device that becomes unresponsive from a Odin flash that went bad. I personally have only seen a few true bricks they are rare but it does happen from time to time..

From what it sounds like I can see Sprint offering you a refurb for no charge if you have TEP. They would probably just pass it off as a hardware failure for whatever reason.

I hope this experience hasn't given you a bad view of anything we attempted. Hope to see you around again soon.

Paul.

It's working!!! my uncle decided to go for round 2 and bought a new cable and did it on his computer. It's working!!!!

Excellent, once again it does prove that a USB cable can be the culprit to a failed Odin flash as we have suggested in the past.

Glad it worked out for you :)
