How to update rooted 4.4.2 N7 to 5.0.1?

Hi everyone,

I currently have a rooted 4.4.2 Nexus 7, but I've been itching to get the 5.0.1 (or 5.0) Lollipop on it. I am on stock 4.4.2, and I keep getting notifications to update to 4.4.3, but I haven't because I didn't know how to OTA update while on root without bricking/losing data.

After some research, I was now wondering if it's possible to update directly from 4.4.2 to Lollipop (and bypass 4.4.3 and 4.4.4)? I was planning to use WugFresh's updated Toolkit and this method here: http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-t...4-4-4-without-losing-any-data-update-0155334/

The link above uses WugFresh's toolkit to unroot the device and flash the 5.0.1 image from the Google Developer website. From there, you can re-root the Nexus 7 and add back a custom recovery. My hope is that this can get me to rooted 5.0.1 without wiping my user data/apps. Does anyone have any input/comments/suggestions on my hopeful plan? Thank you for your help!

Since updating a rooted phone can brick it, the update process first checks for root (and the stock ROM). If the phone is rooted, the update process stops and you get a message telling you that updating failed.

It depends on whether the 5.0 update is incremental from 4.4.2. 4.4.3 or 4.4.4. Assume it's an increment from the latest update (if you update over the air, you;ll get the correct update for what you have. If that's not the latest available, you'll get another update notice the next day, etc., until you're current.

Contact the developer and ask.

The best way of doing it is manually unrooting and updating OTA. If that fails, the unrooting left some signs that the phone had been rooted (like a backup file that doesn't come with the stock ROM) and you'll have to flash stock 4.4.2 first. (Or find out [XDA is a good place to find these things out] what files you have to remove before you unroot. Very few ROM and system-level developers hang out here, they're all over on XDA.)

Thanks for the reply! I meant, can I use the 5.0 image and after unrooting, manually flash it to my 4.4.2 Nexus (thereby bypassing 4.4.3 and 4.4.4)? In other words, can I get to 5.0 without incrementally updating to 4.4.3, and then to 4.4.4? Thanks again!

Im new to rooting...
I just did a stock root with no rom...
im on android 4.4.2..
I have the tmobile note 3, sm-n900t

So.. in order to update android, I have to unroot... then update.. then reroot?
Sorry.. quite confused...
