how to update to 4.4 android without sim card?

My friend has an ATT GS3 but she doesn't have ATT service anymore and doesn't have an ATT sim card. Is there a way to update her GS3 to Kitkat? As I understand it you can't update an ATT phone without active service.

Since it's the carrier that pushes the update, if you don't have service with them, they aren't going to send you an update. She can root the phone and install a ROM without service though.

I figured I would be able to get the update over wifi. I guess not.

If it was a Google Play edition, then yes....AT&T or other carrier, I'm thinkin no

You should be able to use the Kies software to update it. Or, if the image has already been posted online you can manually load it using Odin.

I tried Kies but it said I had the latest software. Does Kies get the update after it's available over the air?

Yes. Sometimes it takes awhile, depending on the carrier. It took about a month between the time the OTA was available and when it became available through Kies (for my SCH-i535 Verizon variant). YMMV.

Unfortunately both of the sites that I normally recommend don't even have CURRENT AT&T firmware, much less the latest. So you're probably going to have to see if someone on XDA has posted an image - sorry.
