how to upgrade to froyo 2.2 on Epic?

Ok... i have been reading about how now we can pre-upgrade our Epics to Froyo and I have tired to read the instructions on how to upgrade but they are confusing and telling me to download this and then don't download this if you have this... so can someone just give me a step by step easy way to upgrade and the correct link to download 2.2... i think i have seen like 4 different versions around... thanks a lot... i knew how pre-upgrade on my BlackBerry but to me Android is a little more harder... i understand the warnings and the outcomes but i'm willing to try and i'm sure i would succeed

Then backup using nandroid backup in recovery mode and put that file in a safe place.

those 4 different kinds are all different roms. its actually very simple, you just need to get the jist of it.

you need to root your phone, gain full access.
get a custom recovery image - allow for backing up and flashing new roms.
pick a rom and flash it. thats the jist, but after you do it itll be a lot easier to understand

Try plugging your phone in and mounting it. If it detects your phone while in debugging mode and allows for file transfer then you should be alright
But downloading and installing just in case is alright - it wont harm your computer in any way and if you are having your phone for a while then you should install them.

i did all that and now when i do try to flash it using rom manager it reboots then starts and then says then it stops saying:
E:failed to verfiy whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Instanllation aborted


these are the steps i did
i downloaded one.click.root.exploitv2.3.0 and galaxy s driver
ran the run.bat file
it rebooted my phone
then i downloaded rom manager
i did a clockwork recovery
then i chose the viperrom.zip from my SD
it won't isntall the viper rom it say it can not have any spaces in the file name so i changed it and it rebooted and thats when this message popped up...
E:failed to verfiy whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Instanllation aborted


am i doing something wrong or missing a step

You have the same problem I have, your epic is running two seperate recoveries. Make sure in rom manager you hit the flash recovery button (First button) and select epic 4g.

Try this. Rom manager reboot to recovery. While phone is turning off, press and hold the power, volume down and camera buttons. That should give you clockwork recovery.

Note, it you get the blue text recovery, press power, volume up camera, as soon as the phone goes blank, press power, vol down and camera.

Clock work should take care of the rest. But if not you can use the menu. Up down = vol rocker, select = camera

Couple of questions about custom ROMs and Froyo

Hi everybody,

I just had a couple of questions about some things, and if you can answer i'd greatly appreciate it.

My Epic is rooted because i wanted the ability to delete bloatware (which i backed up in case of updates).

I know there are custom ROMs with Froyo, and i wanted to know if they are worth using (are they say stable and issue-free? i just don't want to read through the endless threads to read about the issues, so maybe someone has experience with them).

If i choose to try a Froyo rom, after rooting my Epic what else do i have to do in order to make nandroid backups and install these ROMs?

well to flash any rom including froyo you need to flash clockwork recovery. Not by downloading rom manager and flashing that way.

But actually search google for "one click clockwork recovery for epic 4g" and then find a thread you can somewhat understand - to the point where you just follow directions.

After that go download the rom. Boot into clockwork recovery. Select install rom from sd card. Then select the rom you downloaded.

And just so you know. It does not matter if you made your backup with the bloat ware. You wont be able to get updates thatll work - ie be installable on your phone. Youll just get an error or worst, brick your device

your actually missing a huge step. You rooted your phone.

But you still need to install clockwork recovery.

Search "one click clockwork recovery for epic 4g"
then find a thread you can understand - just ot the point where you cant read the directions and follow them.
Then you should be good to go

your definitely not running 2 recoveries as far as i know because you are getting the installation aborted as in theres no update zip at all.
You cant flash clockwork recovery using rom manager!!!!

titanium backup is good for restoring your apps and what not.
But if clockwork mod's nandroid backup creates a whole image - meaning everything is backed up when you make the backup - all your settings, apps, rom, everything on the phone.
Lets say you make a backup, then install ten thousand apps and a new rom. When you restore your backup your phone will be exactly like the way it was when you backed it up,.

Titanium will only restore your apps, and settings but typically restoring your settings doesnt do ****.

Also you need clockwork mod to flash roms - which is really the same thing as reading a backup - their both read only memory images which is what rom stands for

It's a little confusing when the ROOT installation says "Now has ClockWorkMod". Does that mean the ROM Manager is already installed on the phone? I'm guessing NOT, since it's not in my APP tray.
I had the Palm Pre before this, and hacking was a bit easier, so again, please forgive my ignorance.

BTW...Is there a way to track all my personal posts? Sometime I forget where I posted, and would like a way to see if anyone has responded.

It is possible that you have clockwork installed. Do you remember what root method you went with? I think there's a couple of them that have clockwork incorporated into their script.

But no you can't flash clockwork using rom manager. Its a common misconception around here. You should do a search on Google for "one click clockwork mod for epic 4g" and find a thread you can somewhat understand - to the point where you can follow the directions precisely that they give you.

Rom manager will come in handy afteryou use clockwork for a couple weeks and you gain a better understanding of roms and backups.

Don't be afraid to explore all the different things on clockwork and rom manager. I learned from trial and error for the parts I couldn't find any instruction on. For the most part bricking wont occur unless you are writing scripts, installing roms wont brick u unless u get a bad rom which never happens.

power your phone off

the press the camera button, volume down then power and hold all three until you see the green clockwork mod recovery console options. (normally 10-15 seconds on my phone)

like the guy above said, power off. Then hold volume down plus the camera key and press power.

If you encounter the normal recovery (blue text) try hitting apply update.zip from sd card. That's how I have to get to clockwork.

What I'd do if I were you, install rom manager, hit flash clockwork recovery at the top and choose epic 4g. Then scroll down to reboot into clockwork and if that works your good.

If you get a "signature failed" on either of the ways I told you. U need to search Google for clockwork for epic 4g and install it yourself.

Typically hitting flash clockwork in rom management wont work, and it wont, but for mine I needed to do it for it to recognize that I had clockwork on my phone, so try it.

I just successfully rooted using this method and flashed the 2.2 rom, works like a charm!!!!
