How water resistant/repellent is the Moto X Pure Edition?

So I just randomly thought of this... I know the phone isn't water PROOF and can't be taken underwater or anything, but it is water resistant. How does that work? Like if my hands are wet can I pick it up and use it without worrying? I don't think I saw any cover on the USB port like the Galaxy s5 had... What if a little water got in there?

Again I get that I shouldn't take it swimming haha, but the thought of being able to grab it right after getting out to snap pictures or something is pretty awesome.

Re: Water resistance question

It has no water resistance rating - as in it's not like the Samsung Galaxy Sx Active line or even the third gen Moto G with it's IPX7 rating.

The Moto X Pure Edition is "water repellant" or "splash proof". It has the same "nano coating" as other recent Motorola devices.

Here is Motorola's exact disclaimer (my emphasis in bold):

*Advanced nano-coating technology creates a water repellent barrier to help protect against moderate exposure to water such as accidental spills, splashes or light rain. Not designed to be submersed in water, or exposed to pressurized water, or other liquids; Not waterproof.

Re: Water resistance question

My question is, isnt slapping a screen protector on it makes that useless unless the screen protector is repellent as well lol

A screen protector wouldn't have any affect on how water proof your phone is. You can get water on the screen of any smartphone without damage, as it's coated in glass. The nano coating is applied to the internals of the device to protect from potential water damage.

See I don't get what any of that means... Haha. Can I pick it up with wet hands? If it's sitting on a counter and someone spills a drink, can I wipe it off and all will be ok? It says light rain, so could I say, run outside real quick and take a picture of my backyard in the rain and then run inside, and all will be fine? Those are the first 3 scenarios that come to my head that I imagine using a phone that's described as water _____ (any kind of resistant/repellent/etc that's not straight up water proof).

If not, why mention it at all in the product specs? It might as well not say anything about water, right?

I can understand your confusion. Moto adds the nano coating as a sort of "light" form of protection against a small amount of water getting into your phone (via speaker, charging port, volume buttons, etc.). All moto phones have this protection. However, you can find videos online where people completely submerge their phone in a bowl of water and it comes out fine. *Note: I am not telling you to do this or that you can get away with it*. My point is that this typically serves to do a great job at preventing water damage, but Motorola does not guarantee this since it's not officially certified to do so. If Motorola did claim it was waterproof, they would 1) need to be officially certified and 2) replace any phone under warranty that suffered such damage.

So to answer your questions, yes you can pick it up with wet hands (but your phone may think water droplets are finger presses), yes you can take a photo in light rain, but the spilled drink is iffy, depending on how much gets into the phone. I'm also assuming this spilled drink is water, haha.

Main reason I didn't take the plunge (pardon the pun) on a leather back is because I've gotten so used to not worrying about getting my phone a little wet (last three phones are Moto X 2013 [silicone back] and 2014 [walnut back] and Nexus 6). I think it would drive me nuts worrying about getting the leather wet under my normal current usage.

Had my moto x 2014 in a dry box of my kayak that wasn't actually dry, sat face down in water for about 15 minutes. Gave it to my sister in law in a canoe and it was shutting off and on and by the end of the little kayak trip(about 2 hours) it was on and working like normal. Posting this from it right now
