Moderators: if this question belongs in another thread please move it.

I purchased the Nexus 7 tablet. Never been interested in tablets because I didn't want to lug the thing around, but the Nexus tablet has me interested because I can use it to read my newspaper, books, mags, but still run apps and games from the Play Market, and it is a pure Google experience.

My question:

Since there is no network carrier involved how will we receive system updates and who will we receive them from?

I presume Google, but how will we receive updates - through Wifi, through Play Market, through the web?

There was no need for a PC with my WiFi Xoom. I'm sure updates will be pushed out over WiFi.

You will get the same dialog for software updates that you do on your phone.....it won't change. Google will be the one releasing it though.

OTA is kind of misleading, because it implies that something is being "sent" to you device. In reality, your device is receiving a message that says newer software is waiting. The update can then be downloaded through any data connection, be it 3g, 4g, or wifi.

OTA is over the air and when you download the update your doing so over the air (wifi 3g 4g). If you had to download to your computer and then transfer to a device then its a different story. Google will send out all the updates to your device. Can't wait till we have these in our hands.

I believe the carriers "send" out the OTA's.

The wifi only devices won't have a carrier to push them out. Google does some kind of magic and gets all of the devices the ota update.

Android devices ping the servers to see if there are updates, and if there are your device will prompt you to download. This is how I understand the process. You can manually check for updates somewhere in your settings page.

I usually install an update if I see it here, but do an OTA once available, because they are usually less buggy.

the updates will come via wifi. Even better since we dont have to deal with the carrier bs updates will always come as soon as their are available.

If by "misleading", you mean "not misleading at all", then you are absolutely right.

What I meant is you still download the update.......

The "OTA" is just a push notification

No OTA means you download it Over The Air, instead of plugging it in to a PC to download it.
