Hi guys,

First I want to say that none of this work is mine all credit goes to the original creators. Also this is my first thread so be gentle :)

So this is how I rooted, fixed my 3g, installed the Cannibal Open Touch recovery, and the Cold as Ice Rom . This was done from a stock zvj fully updated phone without using a computer.

READ THIS FIRST -- http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...ome-basic-optimus-s-guide-newcomers-info.html

***Some general warnings***

You are responsible for your phone. These instructions worked for both phones I tried it on. That's the extent of my testing :) As always there is a chance something can go wrong so if you brick your phone not my fault. Please read about what you are installing as there is alot of information in the forum post's that i've linked to. This will wipe all your user data.

1.Download Androzip File Manager from google play ( Google Play link) this is to be able to download .zip files and to move the file to the correct location.
2.Download the official zvd downgrade from sprint here : update.zip (taken from this post http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...sprint-zvd-froyo-downgrade-now-available.html)
3. Open Androzip and move update.zip from /Downloads to the root of the sdcard.
4. Turn off phone.
5. Reboot phone into recovery ( hold Volume up, home key and the power button for 10 seconds)
6. Choose wipe data/factory reset
7. Choose wipe cache
8. Choose apply sdcard : update.zip
9. restart android
10. setup phone normally
*optional* I was having some 3g and data problems( Error 67 and data connectivity) so I updated my profile and prl ( menu key, settings, about phone) Do NOT do a firmware or system update. This fixed my issues with data.
11. Download Androzip File Manager from google play ( Google Play link) this is to be able to download .zip files and to move the file to the correct location.
12. Download LoaderDroid from google play( Google Play link) this is to be able to download .img files.
13. Allow install of non market apps (menu key, settings, applications)
14. Download gingerbreak here : gingerbreak1.2.apk (found here -[App] [26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers)
15. Install and run gingerbreak your phone will restart if all goes well. Your now rooted congrats :)
16. Download Cannibal Open Touch recovery here forums.projectopencannibal.net
17. Open Androzip and find "CannibalOpenTouch-v2.1_ls670.img" ( should be in /Downloads on your sdcard) and rename to cot-recovery.img (long press the file for the rename menu)
18. Download flash_image gui here : flash_image gui.apk (found here -[APP] Flash Image GUI - SDX-Developers Forum)
19. Install and run Flash Image Gui.
20. Choose "Recovery Image" then "browse" choose "cot-recovery.img" ( should be in /Downloads on your sdcard) -- Flash the image. Flash Image Gui should tell you success.
22. Choose what ROM you would like to install and download it. - Cold As Ice (Ice cream sandwich Android 4.0), Pac-Rom (scroll down to find download links) (Jelly Bean Android 4.2), CM7.2 ( Gingerbread Android 2.3), or look around you have a zvd radio. See here(zvj to zhd patch) for zvj patches.
22. Download Google Apps (available in the forum post for each rom)
23. Turn off phone.
24. Reboot phone into recovery ( hold Volume up, home key and the power button for 10 seconds)
25. Choose Pre-flash wipe (volume to move and menu to select) -- Yes - Wipe all
26. Choose ZIP Flashing -- Choose ZIP from SD card -- find the ROM you downloaded (most likely in /Downloads on your sd card) and press menu once selected. Choose Yes - Backup and install ** if you cant open /Downloads boot back into Android and use Androzip to move the ROM to the root of the sd card**
27. Choose ZIP Flashing -- Choose ZIP from SD card -- find the Google Apps you downloaded (most likely in /Downloads on your sd card) and press menu once selected. Choose No - Install without backup. ** if you cant open /Downloads boot back into Android and use Androzip to move Google Apps to the root of the sd card**
*optional* if applying a radio patch do so now.

so whats the workaround when we go to download gingerbreak (from XDA's website) and the only thing that shows up on my phone is SBS Gatekeeper's Virus Blocker Lite showing that the file download was blocked because it contains a virus?

Yeah, the way the thing works is by exploiting the same thing that rootkits do; don't worry about it. I've been using it for ages and it's fine. I finally just added the file as an exception in my virus manager (MSE).

Seriously, it's not a rootkit. :)

Don't know what the workaround is, though, sorry.

It doesn't contain a virus, it's just the way the exploit is structured that it is seen as containing a virus. Turn off virus protection or delete it prior to download.
I used Dolphin Browser to download to phone.

You need to have the USB debugging box checked in: menu/settings/applications/development.

Move it from the download folder to the root of the sd card, then install. When finished select done.
Go to app drawer and select the app.

The exploit is totally safe and will not harm your phone.

It could take anywhere from one to ten tries to get it to establish root access.
If after 12 minutes it doesn't auto reboot your phone then pull battery and try again.

Sent from my LG-VM670 using AC Forums mobile app

If you root your phone, and don't have a custom flash_image and recovery, then when you mess something up you will have no backup to fall back on. The Stock recovery doesn't have the capability to back up a ROM. A custom recovery does.
No backup, a messed up ROM or a brick.
Never root without installing a custom recovery, and making a backup of the ROM first (don't even think about deleting the bloatware until a backup is made)
I know, I didn't know about the custom recovery and the backup with my first V (the stone cold brick)
