Got the 10 yesterday, as much as I am very happy with it ,today I tried the screen outdoor directly under the sun and noticed 2 hairline scratches, one on the lower right that is relatively long (4cm) and another on the top right, it can't be me because I took extra care of it, nothing touch the screen apart my fingers.
I always had hairline scratches on HTC phones but this is the 1st time I can clearly say it's from factory.
The thing is, I don't know if they will accept to swap it under warranty and even if they do it I am not sure at all I will get again a Sharp panel (mine is and it's superior to the pinkish tianma)
These hairline scratches don't really bother me as you can't see them but under noon direct sun, but still it's a factory error

Yup, it will be difficult to prove to HTC when the scratches happened. Doesn't seem like it's worth using up your UhOh coverage.

Re: HTC 10 hairline scratches out of the box!

Did you wipe it at all with a cloth or anything? Sometimes, dust particles can stick to a microfiber cloth and produce a scratch.

Re: HTC 10 hairline scratches out of the box!

On my VZW HTC i had a small knick/dent where the glass met the frame, but i just kept it because it was too small to go through the hassle of return

I would have if there was not this screen panel lottery, I am so happy to get the Sharp panel while everyone else around me got the Tianma (the one that gives pink and is not very good under sunlight) that I am not taking the risk for hairline scratches that I won't see but in a specific situation.
Outdoor but not directly under the sun it won't show at all, it's like it need strong UV to show, I had a few on previous HTC, if a fly come on the screen it will do a scratch!! I thought HTC learned to make the upper layer better but it's still extremely sensitive.
BTW we don't have Uh Oh in my country, just regular warranty.
Do you think a tempered glass can hide them for good?

Tempered glass screen protector should make it so the scratch doesn't show provided that it is a pretty small one. Although keep in mind that if you sell your phone, that it would probably get less money due to the scratches.

I agree but it's impossible to see them at all unless outside in a very bright day, even if a cloud decrease by little the sunlight you won't see them, I think it's the polarization layer as they show only in extreme condition of sunlight, with the A9 which has no polarization layer due to its amoled screen you won't have these kind of ''hidden'' scratches, I doubt the guy who will buy it from me will notice it, I noticed it because I wanted to test the sunlight visibility in direct bright sunlight or else I wouldn't have noticed at all, it's really hidden and need a high amount of UV light. I am not the only one BTW I saw in another forum people who ''discovered'' these weird hairline scratches under bright sun while they never ever put keys or anything that could scratch the screen in any way, like me they don't really bother because 95% of the time you won't see them.
I am angry against HTC because they didn't fix that super sensitive layer after all these years, and this time it was most probably scratched at the factory, my ex-M9 screen got the same scratch because someone put his earphones one the screen, imagine a rubber cable scratching the external layer, how f**ed up is its resistance, it can withstand big scratches thanks to Gorilla glass but not super tiny ones, dunno perhaps it's normal I am very nitpicking. I am gonna call the warranty department and explain the situation out of curiosity to see if they replace it or not, but if they does I am worried that they will replace it with a pinkish screen. 4 units over 5 are coming with the pinkish panel, also the Sharp panel like mine has definitely more nits, so should I lose this beautiful screen and risk to have a ''bad'' one for scratches that I won't see but 1 or 2 times a week for a couple of seconds?

Re: HTC 10 hairline scratches out of the box!

Best to contact them asap.

But like you I have the Sharp too and dont wanna end up with a diffeent panel.
For some reason I have some hairline scatches on my phone, and I dont know how they appeared. Noticed only because im OCD when it comes to removing fingerprints off my screen lol.
Screen seems to scratch easily...

So for now I've put it in a pouch.

Called them and they won't replace it for scratches because I can't prove it's from factory, in another hand I tried it again today I couldn't see them at first because a slight fingerprint was covering most of them, tried outdoor again sunny day but not directly under the sun and I couldn't see them at all and the screen was cleaned from fingerprints, so I am keeping it for the glorious Sharp.
I never had such beautiful screen(panel) on an HTC, super bright and vivid with pure whites

Expected of them, guess we'll have to start doing multi angle 4K unboxings when we get new phones lol, just incase we need proof.

But yeah I only see them when I hold it at a certain angle, thankfully not too bothersome so I'm sticking with mine and hope I don't get any more scratches that are deeper and more noticeable.

Shame really, that it seems it scratches easily.
Wonder If theres issues with the oleophobic coating or w/e its called Im not knowledgable on this stuff.

Only thing I can think of is the the phone rubbing against the jeans material in the pocket and the one time I accidently put my phone in the pocket with a coin, which I removed straight away but its supposed to be GG3 so...I've been pretty careful with it for the most part.

You think the coin scratched it or the jeans cotton fabric?

Re: HTC 10 hairline scratches out of the box!

How can I find out if I have the Sharp panel? Any hints on the manufacturing on box to look for if I plan to exchange?

Install devcheck app from playstore and go to ''hardware'' part of the app.
Tried again today while walking outdoor under a heavy sun at 11:30am and then 12:30, I couldn't spot the scratches at all!!! I think I saw them the other day because I really placed the screen in an extreme angle in a way the screen blinded me with the sun's reflection (you know like when someone fires multiple camera flashes on your eyes), so I am stopping being that much maniacal about it :)

Honestly don't know that's only things i can think of, even still being that it's gorilla glass 3 it shouldn't scratch so easily. So I'm not sure if it is.

But thankfully my scratches aren't that noticeable and are not actually on the main display part.

From my experience Gorilla Glass is not what it claims to be. I found scratches on the screen of my phone (not a HTC 10 btw) a few weeks after I'd bought it. I had treated it with kid gloves in those weeks and hadn't dropped it, knocked it or in any way exposed it to anything untoward. I kept it in my pocket on its own. I have absolutely no idea how it got scratched. Some people suggested it could be dust or dirt particles in my pocket. Gorilla Glass is supposed to be scratch resistant, if it gets scratched just by being kept in a pocket (where most people keep their phone) with a few dust particles, how can they have the audacity to call it "scratch resistant"! I'm completely disillusioned with Gorilla Glass after that experience

I've had great luck w/ Gorilla glass. My M8 got dropped on the tile and cement umpteen times and never had a screen protector in it's 2+ years, yet there are no noticeable scratches.

Same situation here. I've had this phone for like 4 days and I have multiple hairline scratches dead center on the screen. This sucks royally. I'm going to go back to the store and ask for a replacement. Or if worse comes to worst pay the restocking fee and get another one. BTW my screen is a tianma and I think it looks great. If it wasn't for these scratches I'd keep it.

EDIT: I had an HTC One X before and that thing SLID across a tile floor and I kid you not did not get a scratch. It's like gorilla glass is actually getting worse. Idk

Could you see the scratches at any time or only under a direct sun ray?
I think gorilla glass is only for deep scratches like keys and knives,so you will get scratches from cardboard and rubber but not from a scissor, HTC most probably is adding a thin layer for polarization above the gorilla glass and it's this layer that gets the hairline scratches, dunno if they could put this layer under the GG, the S6 edge had lot of hairline scratches our of the box last year...
If you can't see the scratches but in a very specific situation that won't bother you I won't swap it with another, all HTC phones will do that sooner or later (s7 is even worse), unless you add a tempered screen on day 1 and you didn't have scratches from factory, here in my country we still don't have any tempered glass for the 10 nor covers!!
I am treating my 10 like a baby till covers are out

Sorry, but surely that's not correct? Scissors, won't scratch it, but cardboard and rubber will???
