HTC and unlocking bootloaders

As seen on the main page of AC HTC has announced they are taking steps to unlock bootloaders on a few phones, the Thunderbolt not being one of them, yet. My question is does this really matter to us as of right now? We have to do a couple work arounds as of now to get rooted, but we can get into the bootloader, load roms and kernels, so that's all there really is to do in the grand scheme of things with an unlocked bootloader, right? When I had my Droid X the bootloader was locked up solid, I couldn't load custom kernels and flash radios, had to run an app to get into the bootloader.
I see this as a great gesture from HTC, but I don't see anything new coming for us if we do get it unlocked. Am I correct in thinking this?

Not sure it will come to the Thunderbolt... even after they get Gingerbread... which might be an issue with the Gingerbread release until they figure out a way around the lock... they always figure out a way around it.

What would be the reason to unlock some and not others?

HTC has control of what can be unlocked and troubleshooting problems for one or two devices, rather than many more. In sure others will soon follow once the first two are successfully released.
