So my thunderbolt fell today after someone knocked into me and it fell smooth flat. Not on an angle or bouncing but flat and its destroyed!! Insurance doesn't even know what to do! Needless to say I will not purchase a phone without gorilla glass. I dropped my naked Droid a few times like that with not a scratch! So warning get a case no matter what because this screen is weak!!

A screen protector wouldn't protect against a drop. It'd have to be a full body case to absorb the drop
Hmmm yea don't know what to say about this one. A friend of mine has had an incredible for well over a year and he has never had any sort of screen protector on it and the glass is pristine and he's definitely not overly careful with it. Now obviously that has nothing to do with you dropping your phone but based on what I've seen with his incredible I'd assume the glass HTC uses is pretty good stuff regardless. I'll probably buy a silicone body glove just to help absorb drops because lets admit it, it happens to everyone. Really sucks though about your Thunderbolt, hope insurance can get it sorted because that's what it's for.

I assume the larger screen with a bigger surface area makes it more prone to breaking in falls without a case.
I bought a case and a screen protector at vzw and walked out with it on. not going to take any chances.
I think Dinc is using Gorilla Glass.
I've dropped my OG Droid about 4 times, and not a scratch on it.

Fell smooth flat on what? I have drop my droid on its face which resulted on a scratch screen. My buddy's has drop his G2 twice pretty bad with no damage screen.
That sucks but should be expected. Most phones screens are really not built to take much impact. However, few manufactures like Motorola and Apple design there screens to take quite impact without failing.
Did you have a case?
A good case could have prevented this from happening.
P.S The glass broke from shock created by fall regardless of landing flat on it's face. Then the shock made the glass flex to the point of cracking
It fell flat on the face. I am going to go to the store and see of they have stock and will exchange but almost none do. I wanted to cry and yell at them all but I held it in! Good news is the phone works fine just a crazy screen so hopefully I can wait a few days. Edit: I was going to the store for a case right before it happened because I got the extended battery and wanted see what they offered

I work at a corp VZW store, so I may have a fix for you...
If you have insurance, go into the corp VZW store, explain the situation, talk to a manager and have them call them and ask them to do an in-store claim. They more than likely don't have any for replacements yet. They should be able to swap it out in a corporate VZW store. If you're paying for it, make them make it right!

The thing about drops is that no two are alike. Just depends. In my opinion the fact that the glass on your TBolt broke is no reflection whatsoever on the quality/strength of the TBolt glass. All glass will break. Just depends on the specific type of strike. It is virtually impossible to duplicate a drop scenario.
