HTC glass sucks!!!!

I carried an industrialized tablet for years. Dropped them, tossed them & even accidentally dropped and punted one several feet in a parking lot with no damage except scratches. Then one day opened the car door and barely tapped the screen on my knee and destroyed it. The bottom line is drop them on their sweet spot where ever that may be and they are history.

It still sucks!

this is why i bought my TB from Best Buy and bought the Geek Squad Black Tie insurance because you can get ACCIDENTAL insurance for these situations and it is LESS than vzw insurance

This was the answer that was given when a member from another forum emailed HTC about what type of glass they use:
"HTC devices have screens made out of a proprietary formula of glass, not Gorilla Glass."
Even if it was GG, I believe its shatter resistant, not shatter proof.

TEC insurance covers anything and everything. You could throw your phone in the fire and they will replace it. Flush it down the toilet and they will replace it. Play baseball with it and use it as the ball, they will replace it. Just as long as you are not replacing phone after phone after phone within a certain time limit.

actually letting it fall face first is the WORST way you could have dropped it(or on it's back flat too). Glass is more prone to breaking this way because it's own weight works against it's weakest point

Plasma TV's are a perfect example: you NEVER lay a plasma TV flat when transporting because the glass can break under it's own weight whereas when you lay it sideways it is able to use it's strongest angle to support itself.

think about it, if you take a piece of glass and drop it edge first from one foot, it is much less likely to break as it would be if you drop it face first. Just google "lying a plasma flat" and you'll see what I mean. It can happen sitting still but is even worse with movement like when bringing it home in car, or in the case of a phone, dropping it.

There was a video I watched where these dudes were testing the strength of the glass on their phones. They had various phones and dropped them at different angles. When they dropped them from an angle I don't recall there being any problems but every time they dropped it flat on the surface from waist level the glass shattered including the Gorilla glass on the iPhone.

Thanks for the lesson at your expense. I'll have to be extra careful now

That sucks but should be expected. Most phones screens are really not built to take much impact. However, few manufactures like Motorola and Apple design there screens to take quite impact without failing.
Did you have a case?

A good case could have prevented this from happening.

P.S The glass broke from shock created by fall regardless of landing flat on it's face. Then the shock made the glass flex to the point of cracking

Apple? LOL

Every iPhone owner I know of has had a huge glass break on their phone without much impact.

I had my DINC since the end of April, and dropped it a number of times without a case from ~5 feet up, never broke. Then in December I was helping my 2 year old up on the potty, the phone was in my shirt pocket, fell 2 feet face first on tile floor and completely shattered, although still works. Face first is not the way to fall, and I have since learned to use a case for my phones. I'm pretty sure GG would have broke too.

Iphone does not have gorilla glass that's probably why it broke.

It fell flat on the face. I am going to go to the store and see of they have stock and will exchange but almost none do. I wanted to cry and yell at them all but I held it in! Good news is the phone works fine just a crazy screen so hopefully I can wait a few days. Edit: I was going to the store for a case right before it happened because I got the extended battery and wanted see what they offered
This happened to my son with his EVO sprint insurance would gave fixed it with 100 deductible but he wanted his phonerihgt away so he found someone else to d it and paid 70 dollars. It look as if nothing ver happened to it. He ddin't have a case either, but in his situation he forgot the phonewas on a table andknocked it off with his hand.

HTC uses "Gorilla Glass" but it doesn't go by that name since Gorilla Glass is just a brand name from one particular company that makes that kind of glass, and they don't use that particular company's glass. But rest assured the Bolt has Opaque Aluminum-Silicone Base glass (which is the generic term for "Gorilla Glass")

However, Gorilla Glass is not shatterproof, just scratch-RESISTANT (not scratch-PROOF). So it can still bust on a fall. For iPhone uses the same type of glass that Apple essentially makes themselves, and those things shatter all the time.

The next big thing to come down the line is Dragontrail glass, so be on the lookout in the future for this stuff:

Asahi Glass introduces Dragontrail for consumer electronics, puts the Gorilla on notice (video) -- Engadget

With the bigger screen and the extended battery + no case no wounder it broke.. you basically duct taped a rock to the back of your phone and dropped it face down without any protection.

Its kind of common sense that would have happened.

I hope you can get a new one though. good luck.

Gorilla Glass isn't indestructible, but it's definitely scratch resistant. Over a year of normal use, and the wear and tear on my Droid is all around the edges, but the glass is as smooth as the day I took it out of the box.

Gorilla glass is a trademarked name for a specific product. What the the Thunderbolt has mabe be like Gorilla glass, it is NOT Gorilla glass. And if you search "Opaque Aluminum-Silicone Base", the only thing that pops up on google over and over and over is the answer to one email about the Incredible "The screen display is actually an Opaque Aluminum-Silicone Base. It is called Gorilla Glass, which is impervious to the very real threats of key scratching and localized pressure."

Now, the email i got directly from HTC says:

Dear *** ****
I understand that you would like to know if we used Gorilla glass on the Thunderbolt.

***, HTC devices have screens made out of a proprietary formula of glass, not Gorilla Glass.

I wish people would get it straight, NOT GORILLA GLASS!
