HTC Hero from Alltel, question on rooting

As of yesterday, the HTC Hero is now available for Alltel customers that are being divested from Verizon. I noticed on the Alltel website that their version of the Hero will ship with 2.1. I would like to root my phone once it arrives so I can run the wireless hotspot software. Does anyone know how to root the Hero that's already running 2.1 from the factory?

Not possible yet, no exploit has been found. If it had 1.5, it could be rooted, then a custom rooted 2.1 ROM added.

That is what I was afraid of. I guess I hope it doesn't take long for people to find an exploit once they get the phone in their hands.

You might want to check XDA forum. I think they have a thread on this, and I think they might have a root method:

It has not been updated, but starting at page 3, there's claim of success.
