HTC m8 envy?

None here. Went from HTC 4G LTE to S4, and now S5. I love the S5, it's stellar. Way better than the S4 IMO. I took a hard look at the HTC One but I'm glad I went with the S5.

If hTc keeps this build, increas3 the Camera, gives me MultiWindow and somehow give me Wireless Charging and/or Waterproof. I have no problems dropping Samsung.

Pro S5

It won't have wireless charging until they ditch the metal back.

The only thing the HTC One has over the S5 is the speakers... Other than that I love this phone

I will admit I am a little envious of the M8, especially the speakers. If that camera was just a tiny bit better I would definitely go with it

And I know this is an unpopular opinion but I actually like TouchWiz and HTC Sense. It looks like Sense has gone a bit more minimalist but I like having a splash of color/features that are added to stock Android/Google. I know they also add bloatware but that's a relatively easy fix

I had a hard time decided between the two at first, but the screen and camera of the S5 quickly won me over at first (in person) sight. It's been a few months since I got my S5 and I'm still very happy with my decision and definitely wouldn't change my mind if I had the option. Beyond the better general image quality, the extremely extensive thread about the M8's plastic lens cover gives me great pause. I also feel more secure knowing that I can use my phone in the pouring rain without a worry in the world. :)

But who uses their phone in the pouring rain? I mean look how long we went without "water resistance" on our devices but the minute Samsung toots their horn about it, everyone jumps on board with "I can do this and that" or "jump in the pool without worry". By no means am I poking at you - some others like the heart rate thing-a-ma-bob.

Water proof or not I'm never jumping into a pool with my phone lol

Thanks to the iPhone and the previous LifeProof cases for them and the s4 I'm used to using my phone whenever and during whatever. Just being able to take it with me when I'm on a walk in the rain or near a pool again gives me peace of mind. I guess I am one of those few who does use their phone in the pouring rain....or in any other circumstance where it gets wet. I was at Cedar Point this past weekend and I went on the water rides and I have to say I was happy I didn't have to leave my phone in the bin. I'm always afraid someone is going to steal my belongings there even though they typically have separate things for each car or whatever it is.

I understand your point, but I can give you a recent and very specific example in which it definitely would have been a life-saver. As I was leaving the hospital after an appointment a few months ago, the sky opened up and poured the ocean upon us. To make matters worse, I had to park about 150 feet away because there were no good parking spots. So I sprinted my little heart out but by the time I got in the car, I was 100% soaked, honest to God looking like I just climbed out of a pool, fully clothed. There's no way in hell my iPhone 5S would have survived that and my $850 investment would have become a paperweight. Thankfully, my grandma was with me and I was able to put it in her purse as she waited for me to drive the car up to the sidewalk to pick her up so she didn't get wet.

So, again, while I absolutely understand your point because there are people who act like swimming with their phone is something that they can't live without, you must understand that there are in fact real life scenarios in which this feature can be priceless.

And, since you mentioned it, I know I'm in the vast minority with this one but I'm someone who finds great use for the heart rate monitor as well. I have a heart condition called Prolonged-QT Syndrome that requires me to check my pulse frequently, and doing it on my phone is much faster than using my dedicated machine or counting it out in 15-second increments myself.

No offense but if you think parking 50 yards (150 feet) from a hospital entrance is bad you sir have not had to park far anywhere lol.

But in all seriousness, I have owned my gs5 since launch. Not once have I found the waterproofing worthwhile, the fingerprint scanner is abysmal, the heart rate monitor is IMO pointless on a phone also (However it is great on a gear fit or Gear 2/Neo). I work in healthcare and have access to the real deal and tested it one day, got it within 3/4 bpm 3 out of 10 times. I do however love the screen, that IMO is the only thing my gs5 has over my m8. I regret selling my m8 for my gs5 bad. Sense is years ahead of Touchwiz, the build quality is better, sound is better, and I still don't uderstand companies who put the headset jack on the top. Seriously its opposite of the charging port, its an awful design.

As for the waterproofness in phones. About 2 years ago I was out on a lengthy bike trail (22 miles total) and I was about 4 miles in and out of nowhere a terrible storm came in. It poured for almost 2 hours, flooded all the city streets, and I was in it riding a bike lol. I was soaked to the bone, but my iPhone 4s still worked perfectly. In fact the lady who watches my kids dropped her iPhone 5 in the pool about 3 weeks ago and it still works fine. So ya the IP67 is great if you plan to swim with it, but in all real use its pointless.

Of course 150 feet isn't any great distance under normal circumstances, but I guess it's one of the "you had to be there" type things as the rain truly was obliterating.

But if you're so regretful, why not sell it and buy an M8? Why be unhappy when you can change it? Certainly you can either do an even trade with someone or sell it and buy a used one without losing a great deal of money. If waterproofing isn't useful to you, fine, but there are a hell of a lot of people who have lost phones to water damage, myself included, who would strongly disagree. Years ago, back when I had a Kyocera Koi, someone pushed me in my pool not realizing that my phone was in my pocket and needless to say, it stopped working. I took out the battery and dried it as best I could, then put it in a bag of rice for 48 hours, to no avail. Granted, the person paid for it, but the S5 would have saved a huge headache in that scenario, so I'm sorry but you can't tell me that it's a useless feature.

Good points. But I also hope you don't think the heart rate monitor is accurate. My son also has a heart condition (born with two holes in his heart) and has a medical type machine and they are not where close to being accurate. Just an FYI.

Thank you. With the exceptions of a couple times, I've gotten with 5-6 BPMs of the dedicated machine. I know a lot of people report sporadic results, and I don't doubt their accounts, but I've found it to be fairly reliable. It's worth nothing, though, that I'm not using it to determine when to take medication or anything, it's just to keep an eye on where my pulse. I can always tell when it's greatly elevated anyway, the test just helps to narrow down the number.

I got the S5 at launch and am still very happy with it. I haven't handled the M8, but I've read the reviews and while I'm sure it's a great phone, nothing about it makes me "envious" or regretful of my choice. The S5 is awesome and it does everything I need it to and then some. I even like touchwiz. When I get a new phone in a year or two I will definitely consider another Samsung based on my experience so far with the S5.

M8 > S5. For me, here's why:

Sense is a more mature UI than TouchWiz and is much smoother.

Boom Sound. Try watching YouTube on both devices and you'll see what I mean. M8 experience is better.

BlinkFeed > MyMagazine. I've used both. My Magazine is pathetic.

Design is a matter of taste I guess, but then again Samsung has received a lot of public scrutiny over their minimalist design approach. Brushed metal vs soft touch? Only one looks more premium than the other.

Both have SD card slots. Draw.

Removable battery, I guess the S5 takes the edge. Then again, there are portable battery packs.

Camera: one has 16 megapixels. The other well... UltraPixels. The difference is low light photos. Read CNET; Samsung's camera is almost rendered useless in low light.

I currently use an S5. I used the M8 for a short while then had to switch (i actually wanted to). Overall, after using both, the M8 is a better quality device (and that's my opinion). In essence, my smartphone experience with the M8 was better. Don't get me wrong, the S5 is still a really good smartphone, but that's just it - it's only good at what it does.

We don't need to have our phones out while it's raining, going to the washroom, jumping in the pool, etc. Waterproof just adds another layer of protection especially when **** happens. It's one less thing I have to worry about, just think of all the phones laying on the table. My Note 3 almost got owned by Perrier, it sprayed all over nearly missing the USB 3.0 port.

As for the Heart Rate Monitor. The first question my family & friends ask was, why?!?! Samsung being Samsung.

The M8 was a great phone, but i switched to the S5 for one main reason. The backgrounds on the M8 were so dark, if i was in any kind of bright light (even inside the car) I couldn't see the dialing pad numbers. It was impossible to see all the screens due to the fact that they use a lot of dark backgrounds. The S5 has bright big white background screens, much easier to use for me.

I wouldn't stand in the "pouring" rain and use my phone, but I've definitely used my phone in light rain, or when extremely sweaty, etc. etc. Basically, at questionable times were the IP67 rating would have added mental comfort. In short, it is a feature I appreciate. I don't need the fully gasketed back cover, but it is nice to know that I won't hose the earpeice speaker just by putting it up to my sweaty face.

Overall, I'm not too wowed by the HTC. I really don't find either the M8 or the GS5 all that aesthetically pleasing, so the look doesn't do much of anything for me. I would give the nod to the M8 for better form, but the (ugly) ridged surround of the GS5 does seem to make it easier to hold in more configurations. As for materials, I care that the front is scratch-proof glass, I don't really care what the rest of it is made out of.

As for Boom-sound, it would be nice to have that for when I am sitting on the can at home and want to catch an embedded youtube clip on a webpage. But otherwise I wouldn't use it. I certainly wouldn't use it enough to justify that much space being used on the top/bottom of the phone.

I also like that the SAMOLED screen can get very dark, as I tend to watch my phone in bed when we travel and it doesn't bother my wife.

On the whole, now that the GS5 has root and free wifi tethering, I'm really happy with it.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean that I actually stand out in the pouring rain and use my phone. I know I certainly could have said it in a clearer, more concise way and that's my fault, but I simply mean that, as with the specific example I gave, if I get soaked before I make it to my car then I won't have to worry about my phone getting water damaged.

I'm going to be selling it when the G3 comes to Verizon. Until then I am using it in conjunction with my iPhone 5s running the iOS 8 beta.
