There are a few webposts referring to HTC deciding to forgo their aforementioned M8 update to Lollipop 5.1 in August and jumping straight to Android M in the near future.
Has Android Central missed this news?

I highly doubt it. Htc are usually very punctual and have already mentioned in various sources that the htc one m8 will get the update to android 5.1 plus sense 7 in August. It's been almost 6 months since any updates at all so we are long overdue am update so they must have been working on something. The fact android m will take more months to be released I can't see them skipping android 5.1 in August as planned but I guess we will see what they Do

I wonder if htc are back tracking. They did post twice on twitter that android 5.1 and sense 7 would be released in August. This was in the UK at least.

Android m isn't even released yet and then takes at least 3 months before it will ever rolled out to phones. They should still released android 5.1 during this time otherwise we could go over a year without ever seeing an update for the m8. It's already been 6 months since they released android 5.0.1 and it's still full of bugs and not stable at all. When I owned the htc one m7 they always brought out the updates for Android and never skipped any. Are htc slacking?!

I have always enjoyed Android Central's review and phone recommendations, and when it came time to replaced my last HTC, both AC's reviews and my past personal experience with HTC phones (this is my 3rd, the HTC HD2 was my first) made purchasing the M8 a positive experience and I do not regret it at all. There is a lot of bashing over the camera.... Oh well, it takes great pictures and if I am wanting better ones I get out the SLR. Compromising overall smartphone operations to have a 'better' photo is a non-issue for me. This HTC One M8 is and has been phenomenal.

But I digress, my concern was that Android Central has not commented on the jump to Android M and skipping the 5.1 upgrade. After all the positive postings by AC about HTC, this phone, and their opinions of how HTC is a leader in Android promotion, why has this news not even been a side note?

I am saddened that HTC has fallen on bad times, advertising has pushed an awesome company aside in favor of flair and hype. This company has lead the Android world for many years in many ways, I hope they will overcome this bump in the road.
And continue to be the Best phone manufacturer, as I feel this one I am holding is a gem.
I am concerned that AC may be following the crowd and starting to write HTC off of their radar, and that will be a loss for everyone. HTC set so many standards and bars to reach that other manufacturers were forced to stop dabbling in mediocre products and produce great, reliable smartphones to keep up.

Wouldn't Android M be the last update for the M8 considering that in March of next year will be 2 years for HTC's promise of updates???

My htc one m8 on kitkat 4.4 ran flawlessly. Since then, and the worst update ever seen on android, 5.0.1 lags everywhere particularly on the messages screen (basic text screen) videos and streams stutter and are choppy, battery life has been hit, Bluetooth is unstable, general phone slowdown during inactivity, this list goes on . Even Google are aware of these issues for the earlier edition of android lollipop which is why 5.1 came out promptly and really does address these issues. However, we've had to cope with this terrible android release for months with a promise of an upgrade to 5.1 2 months ago for August and now from various sources it seems htc are now skipping this update for the m8. There is going to be at least another 6 months minimum until android M sees the light of day for current smartphones which means it could be a year without a single update for the m8

I think HTC should be ashamed of themselves. Broken promises, lack of support, not engaging community concerns. This company was leading the way with the htc one m7 which I previously had. They updated it every time a new version of Android was released. Now they are more "established" they are abandoning supporting their flagship phones. I for one will NOT be getting another htc phone because I don't trust they will support their phones for the short/mid/long term future.
