HTC Mail Memory Leak/Bug ("Phone Storage Getting Low")

Same problem with mine (HTC Incredible). Low Phone Storage..Running 3 POP3 emails plus Gmail. I have un-installed nearly all the apps and deleted emails, texts and cleared all cashe's but still the same message. I guess I will try what all the others users have suggested to do in the posts. I don't think it's a lemon issue, I got mine 2 weeks before the launch date and it just seemed to start this last week. Verizon indicated there was a software fix coming out soon for this. We'll see what happens..What is this K9 mail App?

Yahoo has an App on the market I use that and Gmail with no problems
Had my Dinc sence release day. Im just staying away from HTC Mail and
HTC test message, using Handcent for that. HTC knows theres a problem
some Im waiting for fix but we will have to wait for Verizon to finish catering to Motorola first.

You don't you need to uninstall HTC mail, just don't add any accounts to it.

Someone help me with this. I was letting it go for a while, but now I'm just getting pissed. The low space notification has popped up probably 20 times in the last few days, and now it isn't going away.

I don't want to reset my phone. There has to be another way to get rid of it.

I looked at my app list, and here are the largest ones:

*Facebook for HTC Sense - 22.7mb - all of this is data, and it can be cleared. should i clear it? what happens if i do?

*Contacts Storage - 21.96mb

*Google Earth - 20.67mb (360kb data) - only option seems to be uninstall

*com.htc.socialnetwork.provider - 13.3mb - no idea what this thing even is. data can be deleted

*HTC Sense - 13.08mb

*Facebook - 10.86mb (2.96mb for the app, 7.91mb data) - Uninstall updates is the only option I see.

By the way, mail is at 2.09mb. Cache is 4.00 kb.

I have no idea what to do, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Android 2.2 Update Fix

Does anyone know if the latest Android update may have possibly addressed this problem with HTC Mail? Any word from HTC about when this might happen? The wait for a fix is beyond ridiculous...

i havent seen it pop up since the 2.2 upgrade. I also did a factory wipe though too. Im guess the wipe helped more than anything since i have seen others continue to see the problem occur

I had this problem with my phone back in May, Verizon and HTC support were not very helpful. I even got them to send me a new phone, but eventually it went away. The 2.2 update came, no new problems, and then out of the blue last week, the Low Storage message came back.

However, I temporarily found a way to get rid of it. It still comes back the next day, but it will go away enough to use the phone for 24 hours. I think it is attached to Gmail, not HTC mail though. When I go to the applications page, search Gmail, and clear data, immediately the Low Storage notification goes away and I can send email again. It also affects Google Talk.

Anyone else still having this issue??

I have had this problem over and over again. I received my phone the day it was released. I NEVER used the htc mail app. I use gmail only. I also use handcent for sms but dont think that matters since all of the txt messages still show up in the htc messages app. I have everything checked off. Verizon replaced my original phone and everything was great for a while but not long enough cause it came back on the 2nd phone as well. This is really absurd that no one recognizes this as a problem. I bought this phone so i could be an app whore. Otherwise I wouldve just stuck with my crapberry. Its absurd that this problem hasnt been acknowledged and fixed. Currently my Internal phone storage is 6.06gb free out of 6.60gb and my phone memory is 516mb free out of 748mb.

i am using both the HTC mail app for 2 different email addresses and the gmail app and I have not had any problems. I did have this problem before the froyo update but not since.

HTC Email Bug - RESOLVED?

My EVO was giving me the "memory alert" message for a few weeks. It would occasionally download a handful of email messages but then stop and give me the alert.

After reading hundreds of posts, and trying to reset the cache, the data, uninstall, reinstall, I would end up in the same place.

Yesterday, I mouted the phone to my PC as an additional drive. I quickly came across a folder named .Mail. In this folder were about 12000 items. JPG's, GIF's, and tokens totalling over 30MB. The majority of these items look to me like email signatures. There are a ton of my customers logos in there, ya know, what you see next to their names at the bottom of an email.

After deleting everything from this folder, I reinstalled HTC mail, and its widget. Its been 24 hours, mail is working fine, no alert message yet.

I'm not saying this is the permanent fix, as Ive just checked that folder again today and its already at 8MB.

When looking at the settings in mail, I have my attachment cache set to "external". I had cleared the cache multiple times when trying to resolve this issue, so I am assuming that clearing the cache is only actually clearing the internal folder, and not the external.

I am going to swith this setting to internal, and see if thru the delete process if those attachments are being removed as they should be.

Any thoughts?

I'm not convinced this is entirely caused by HTC Mail

I have an HTC Droid Incredible with Froyo that I got at the end of November. I just started getting two different alerts saying "Low Phone Storage" and "Low Application Data space" or something similar. Under SD & phone storage I have:

SD Card Total Space = 7.40GB, 125MB Available
Internal Phone Storage Total Space = 6.60 GB, 5.79 GB Available
Phone Memory Total Space = 748MB, 547MB Available

Though I've taken some of the suggestions made on this thread, like removing my accounts from HTC Mail and using K-9 Mail, clearing the mail application cache, and moving some apps to my SD card, nothing seems to be a permanent fix. The alerts disappear only to reappear a few hours later.

Also, I'm not entirely convinced that the HTC Mail program is the culprit. My mail folder was never very large and I didn't start experiencing these issues until I recently downloaded and installed a slew of apps, most notably Dolphin Browser HD and several plug-ins.

In other forums, some have suggested that these warnings occur when phone memory usage gets above 25%, which seems to correlate with my current status (748MB-547MB = 201MB, which is 26.9% of total capacity). They also say to ignore these warnings. This doesn't seem to be a viable solution as many others seem to be running into functionality problems due to this issue. Being one of them, I can't seem to install some new apps, though updating my current apps hasn't been affected, yet.

I'm also not inclined to wipe my phone and start over as I've spent a great deal of time customizing things to my liking, so if anyone has any good insight I'd appreciate it. :)

I cleared data in the facebook app AND I had allot of text's with pic's attached so I cleared the data in the messaging app (you will lose all your texts) and the low space message hasn't been back since. That was about three weeks ago.

I also have had this show up a few times on my phone. I did some research, then I tried a couple of things. The most recent time it showed up was after I had done a number of App updates. After what I read, one of the suggestions said it may be an issue with an App that buggy that I had downloaded. So I went through my list and deleted some Apps that had updated that I do not use much and also cleared out my Mail app and switched over to use K9 Mail, since a number of forums say the included Mail app seems to cause the issue. My Low Space warning disappeared, so we'll see if that does the trick permanently. Hope this helps someone.

I started having this issue as soon as I loaded the new vector based Google Maps app, a month or so ago. Soon after they released a new version which I installed, and that seemed to take care of the problem. I have one reoccurance since then and I killed a couple of running apps and it hasn't happened since. I have a feeling that there is some type of bug in android because it is supposed to swap the programs in and out to prevent this. I never had the problem at all until Google Maps changed. What really ticks me off is these stupid apps that you can't remove, because they start up again automatically, like SKYPE, CITY ID, and some others. That's what I am doing in this forum, checking out to see what is involved with rooting so that I can remove this junk.

HTC low on storage issue - resolved

After a lot of research I think I finally solved this issue. I used HTC mail when I first got my Hero, but this storage issue kept popping up so I deleted my hotmail account from there and started using Droid mail. But there was 85m of data that I could never get rid of and the "low storage" warning kept popping up. No matter what I deleted it kept returning for months.

I committed an entire weekend to getting to the bottom of this and once I did I wanted to post something to help those who were as frustrated as I was in trying to find an answer.

First I had to root the phone which, after a lot of research, I found a relatively easy way to do (I am college professor and a programmer from long ago, but not skilled in the droid language and too old to learn). I went to the xda developer forum and to this link:

[APP]SuperOneClick v1.5.5 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code) - xda-developers

Here I got info on and downloaded the Superclick app and followed the instructions for rooting the phone.

Once the phone was rooted and I had "Superuser" status, I had to downloaded the Super Manager app from the android marketplace (free app) to use its file manager and gain access to the root folders. It took me a while, by I finally found the folder which held the 85m of data left over from the HTC mail app.

Once in Super Manager, I went to the following folder(s)

File Explorer> data> >data>com.htc.android.mail>
app_mail_temp

there were several other folders there like app_temp, app_mail, files, etc.

When I went in those folder there were hundred of files with sequential numbers. I clicked them all, deleted them and ... Surprise!!! There was my 85m of data. As soon the delete was done the "low on phone storage" warning went away.

I went back to Settings>Manage applications> HTC Mail

so I could check to see if the data had actually been deleted and the data size was down to 1.9m for the HTC mail app. The reason for this, I think, is because there were other folders with files that I did not delete because I wasn't sure what they were and didn't want to go too far and screw up the phone. Until I figure that out I can live with losing 83m of data though and no more warnings (and hopefully a faster functioning phone).

So far I think this solves the problem. I don't know why HTC designed the phone to store the email data like that and making it so hard to delete, but I won't be using that app any more.

I'm satisfied to finally get to the bottom of this, although I lost a lot of sleep this weekend.

Hope this helps those who were as frustrated by this as I was.

Just had this issue on my DInc and after deleting and moving apps, figured out the culprit was Touchdown. It was at 43 megs. I cleared data via the manage apps folder and after re-syching, it was down to like 16 megs. No low memory error message since (it's been several days now).

Only issue I have is that Touchdown re-synching totally messed up my Contacts on my Outlook on my PC (changed them all to first name first, instead of Company first (I'm a heavy biz user), and truncated my notes in Outlook (I have lots of client notes in my contacts). So I had to manually go through nearly 800 contacts and change most to Company name first. But i also lost like a year of notes on many clients too
