This seems like a really strange decision, they are effectively decreasing screen size. Do people hate the soft keys or something? I don't really understand why they'd do this, the current layout is better IMO.
Have there been any rumors about the screen resolution of the new model? The only reason I can think for using that design is that they can use the identical screen from the HTC One while getting rid of soft keys (google request?). I guess the chassis would also be really similar, minus maybe the new camera/LED cuts on the back.
Honestly, I'd much rather them leave it as is (w/ softkeys) or increase the screen size just slightly by removing/moving the HTC logo.
They're going to have to wow with other new features (awesome camera??), otherwise it seems like they're only going to lose more customers. Myself included.
