HTC One: 4G symbol is on while the mobile data is off

Hey guys,

I am asking for your help here with one of the weirdest things I have seen on any cell phone. I tend to turn off the "mobile data" on my Verizon HTC One to save battery, but I have realized that from time to time the 4G LTE symbol is still appearing on the top of the home screen while teh data is off. Sometimes it disappears in a few minutes and sometimes it remains there for hours (of course, the mobile data is still off). I ran the issue by both Verizon and HTC and no one could explain it to me why. I need to add that in such cases, the internet is not working as expected, but having this icon on the top of the screen really worries my that sth is wrong with this device. Any help here?

whilst i have not had this problem on my htc one, sometimes i had to reboot my previous iphone after making changes to how it connects to the network for them to take effect.


its a pain i know but you might want to give it a try just to narrow down the problem.

It's normal. Mines been doing this sense release! I got used to it. I hear the Sprint one will turn off its symbol if I remember right. (I'm on att though)

I haven't seen that issue on my One either, but then I'm not on Verizon. Do the mobile networks show as disabled or disconnected in Settings? There's this post, but it relates to the Galaxy S4. I don't have my One with me today, so I can't say if there's something similar that you might try disabling.

Thanks, I have already done a factory reset but the problem is still there. Is this a software issue or hardware? I got my Android 4.3 a few days ago. Does it mean the phone is defective?

It's not a bug or issue. Its how the phone was meant to work. The data is indeed off but it will show the symbol anyways.

One more thing, when the data is off, and I run the "My Verizon" app, the 4G LTE does appear and stays there for one minute (sometimes more) and then it disappears. I have not seen it with other apps.

Thanks dude, but I asked the HTC folks and they had no idea! if this is the way the phone is supposed to work, why didn't they know anything about it? I know I might seem a little bit picky here but just extended my contract and want to make sure the phone is fine. Plus, when I just had the phone activated, while the both wifi and data were off, the phone managed to download some software upgrade, not A 4.3. How can we explain it?

to monitor data usage and make sure the toggle does un fact work.


then you will have to worry about the notification on your SB. i would ask this question then on the verizon HTC One section to see if other people are encountering the same problem. it may be a carrier-specific glitch.

Right now that I am switching between Wifi and 4G, it is working fine. When on Wifi, no 4G symbol. As I said, the issue I mentioned does not happen all the time. One thing I know for sure is that when the data is off, and I run the "My Verizon" app, the 4G symbol will definitely appears, stays there for exactly one minute and then disappears. Weird right?

Update: when the 4G LTE is technically off (but the 4G symbol is still up there), the web search is not doable as expected; however, "My Verizon" app works and gives me access to my account. This is of course the only app that works. How is that possible? Is there sth special about this app?
